For this episode, I am joined by Jay Blakesberg! Jay is a San Francisco-based photographer, filmmaker and public speaker. He is best known for his music photography, where he has worked with many legendary artists including the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Carlos Santana, Tom Waits, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Flaming Lips, and Phish. He has published 16 coffee table books of his work and his second solo museum exhibit – RetroBlakesberg: The Music Never Stopped is open now at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. As a busy working musician in Toronto he has worked with a number of celebrated world class musicians. In 2015, he co-founded the trio JV’s Boogaloo Squad. They have since worked their way up through the national club circuit, recently headlining at major jazz festivals throughout Ontario and Québec including Toronto’s International Jazz Festival in 2018. Joe is the keyboardist, producer, and one of many songwriters for Pluto Gang, a high-energy jam soul band out of Charlotte, North Carolina. They started playing shows in the winter of 2019, just before the global pandemic, and then spent the last year refining their live show and self-recording their debut album Better Out Here, which came out in November of 2020.
