Doing something a little different on episode 35 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor Podcast. Gonna be talking all about health & wellness, something that I’m truly interested in and get excited about. It’s a topic that I hadn’t touched upon in a while and something that I wanted to do again on this show, but was just waiting to meet the right person to do it with. And that person happens to be my guest on episode 35 - Lydia Hurlbut is CEO of the Filmmakers Academy , which was founded in 2009 as a business that delivers outstanding professional education and mentorship to filmmakers worldwide. Hurlbut earned her master’s degree in forensic nursing at the University of Virginia. From there, her career path journeyed through pediatric nursing and forensic science to life coaching and strategic marketing. She is passionate about wellness and techniques for improving health. Lydia and I met in 2021 for the first time and we really connected on this topic about health and wellness, and agreed on how taking care of our mind and body can lead us to finding success in the film and television industry. As someone that struggled with his health for many years, it wasn’t until I started practicing healthier habits such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious meals, getting proper sleep, meditating, creating a daily routine, and developing a more positive mindset (which I feel I also achieved by going to therapy) - it was all this that played a huge role in achieving my dream of working in film & scripted television. It’s important to identify what works for your journey. We’re just here to present what’s out there and also share our personal stories regarding health and wellness, so that you hopefully find the inspiration and motivation to help you reach your goals and also maybe discover something new about yourself along the way. The idea of moving to a new city without a job or any contacts can be scary and intimidating, but these feelings shouldn't prevent you from moving forward with your plans. There are a lot of things that you can do prior to such a move that'll make that transition much easier and less stressful. This is what I discuss with editor Iain Erskine, ACE ( TRUE STORY, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS, NARCOS: MEXICO, MANHUNT: UNABOMBER ) on this episode and he shares his experience of moving from London to Los Angeles, and having to reboot his career in the United States. Other topics Iain and I discuss include how you can start making contacts before you move out to Los Angeles, how it all comes down to one person giving you an opportunity, the importance of following up with people, the challenges of networking in LA, how adversity builds character, strategies for finding an agent, why the 10% agent fee is worth it, and why you still need to network even if you have an agent. Learning to be a leader and a well-rounded filmmaker are certainly two things that will help you stand out as an editor. A big part of being an editor is having good leadership skills in order to motivate and enable others to contribute towards the success of a production. Also being more knowledgeable of other subjects like cinematography, screenwriting, directing, music composition, or sound design can help you communicate more effectively with other creatives and lead to a long-lasting, successful career. As Roger Nygard, ACE said in a previous episode of the podcast - "Don't be an editor who cuts films, be a filmmaker who edits." My guest on episode 29 is director of photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC ( THE RIM OF THE WORLD, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, WE ARE MARSHALL, NEED FOR SPEED ) and he shares advice on how you can become a better leader and also talks about his role as an educator through various online platforms including the Filmmakers Academy which he started last year. I’m also excited to share that I have joined the Filmmakers Academy as their editing mentor, and it’s been great working with their team and the other mentors, and creating courses about the craft of editing so make sure to check it out today! Some of the topics Shane and I will be discussing on the show today include the importance of developing resilience to thrive in this industry, the future of cinematography, overcoming challenges when trying to break into feature films, how to shine a spotlight on yourself and stand out from others, choosing the right projects to work on, the importance of having a significant other that supports your career goals, and we’ll hear all about the Filmmakers Academy! In episode 28, I talk to Emmy-nominated editor Justin Krohn, ACE and assistant editor Chris Guiral about their recent experience working on the Apple TV+ series WECRASHED , which stars Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. We also dive deep into the working relationship between an editor and an assistant editor on Hollywood scripted television shows. Justin and Chris not only share their process of how they like to work together, but also give advice on what questions assistants can ask their editors if, for example, they want to start cutting scenes or possibly get a co-edit or maybe even get that support to getting bumped up to being a full-time editor. There's some great insight here from a successful editing team that has worked on very big shows including MR. ROBOT, HOMECOMING, BLOODLINE, TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN, and AMERICAN HORROR STORY . Some of the topics discussed in this episode include what questions an assistant editor can ask their editor when they're working together for the first time, why an assistant editor is a creative partner, why you don't need to have scripted TV credits to work on a scripted TV show, how editors can help their assistants move their career forward, how Justin and Chris collaborated on a cool montage sequence in episode 7 of WECRASHED , and a deeper behind-the-scenes look at their experience cutting the Apple TV+ series. --------- BREAK INTO SCRIPTED , a new course from Hollywood Editing Mentor, is the ultimate guide to starting a career in the post-production department of films and scripted television shows. Troy Takaki, ACE is a top film editor (and bass player for the punk band The Boneless Ones), who has cut such box office hits as SWEET HOME ALABAMA starring Reese Witherspoon and HITCH starring Will Smith. He is one of the few picture editors that splits his time between features and television. He recently edited shows such as YOU for Netflix and MR. MERCEDES for Direct TV, and is currently editing CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN for Disney Plus. Aside from working on great projects, Troy has been very active in Hollywood mentoring those in the post production industry. He started the American Cinema Editors' Diversity Mentorship Program after editor Lilian Benson did an informal count several years ago and found that there were fewer than 25 people of color in the organization. In episode 26 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor Podcast, Troy will dive deep into mentoring - what it means to be mentored, how you can mentor other people, and why it's so important in the post production industry. He'll also break down his mentoring process and give advice on how you can find your own mentors. Troy will also tell us about his book "Don't Miss Out On Any Avocado Milkshakes: The Art and Joy of Being a Film Editor" and explain what American Cinema Editors and the ACE Diversity Mentorship Program are all about, as well as how you can become a member of both of these groups. Other topics Troy and I discuss are the importance of cutting projects on the side, how you can break in to Hollywood, why it's best to be in LA in you want to work in film or scripted television, and how you can get bumped up from assistant to editor. Do you know of an editor that has won two ACE Eddie Awards in the same night? I do! That's Will Znidaric, ACE who's my guest on the show today and we’re gonna have a deep and honest conversation about the phycology of editing and also get some insight into the world of documentaries because Will has worked on some amazing, high profile projects such as the Oscar-winning documentary Winter on Fire, Five Came Back, Jane, Quincy, The Black Godfather, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, and Biggie: I've Got a Story to Tell. If you’ve watched a documentary in the last couple of years, you've very likely seen Will’s work. He’s gonna be talking not only about his editing process, but also share his thoughts on how psychology is 50% of the work, and it can be attributed to finding success in post production and becoming a better editor. But aside from being an awesome person and talented editor, Will is also very knowledgeable about the post production industry and has a lot of experience. About 5 years ago, he gave me some piece of advice that helped me make a mindset shift with regards to job rejection. For many years, I'd take it personally if I was not given a job opportunity and it created a lot of self doubt for me, which led to me losing motivation and belief in myself and my abilities. I have a story to share about how Will changed my perspective on rejection that will help you next time you miss out on a job you wanted. Will and I will also be discussing his path from cutting commercials to award-winning documentaries, how it’s okay to take the long road to success in the post production industry, ways you can gain confidence and keep growing as an editor, finding personal growth through pain, the importance of being an optimist as an editor, why it’s important to take care of your health, tips on how you can improve your storytelling skills, and we’ll get some practical advice from Will on how to become a documentary editor. Will and I also discuss the following topics: The connection between cinematography and editing Discovering that a job or career is not right for you The slow, steady approach from being assistant to becoming an editor Starting to build relationships as an assistant editor Having a bright, open, helpful attitude will allow you to become a better editor How there are no shortcuts to good editing The realities of working in editorial How Will got first documentary gig on the Oscar-winning documentary Winter on Fire The essential skills of being a good editor How Will finds the essence of the story in documentaries Debunking the myth that unscripted assistants or editors can’t work on scripted projects The importance of overcoming shyness, putting yourself out there, and communicating your goals Why it’s important to seek new challenges to keep growing as an editor The health & wellness aspect of an editing career How taking work breaks helps with mental clarity and finding solutions in the edit CLICK HERE to join the Hollywood Editing M Check out our free content and other resources! >>> SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts! >>> Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by Jesusdapnk Facebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnk Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnk Instagram: @jesusdapnk

One of the things about working in the post production industry is that a huge opportunity can suddenly come knocking without any notice. It certainly has happened to me. On episode 21 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast, editor/assistant editor Chris Cavanagh joins me to talk about the importance of putting in the work to prepare ourselves for big opportunities, which he recently got when he was asked if he was ready to co-edit an episode of the hit Netflix show, Narcos: Mexico . We’ll hear all about his experience and some cool stories from the past 5 years because that’s how long I’ve known Chris. It was five years ago that Chris and I landed in Los Angeles and started our journey to transition from unscripted to scripted television. We met at a networking event not long after we both arrived in LA from New York City and instantly connected and became friends. We supported each other during this transitional period, eventually broke into scripted television editorial in Hollywood, and now we actually got a chance to work together on Narcos: Mexico . Chris was my assistant editor on season 3 and we ended up co-editing an episode. So now that he's getting his first scripted co-editing credit, Chris is also going to share his strategy for making his way to the editing chair full time. Chris and I will also be discussing ideas that can help you get out of your comfort zone in order to achieve your goals, how you can take ownership of your career and develop a vision for your future, ways to build trust with colleagues, the importance of putting yourself out there and communicating your interests, how we can find emotional support by being part of a community, why it’s important to give a job 100% effort even if you know it’s not suited for you, saying ‘no’ to work that is not going to lead us down the right career path, and much more practical advice and stories from two people that made a career change to pursue their dreams. Other topics discussed in this episode include: How Chris learned Spanish to prepare for working on season 3 of Narcos: Mexico Creating a financial plan to make a career change when you have a family and move to a new city How Chris got his first big break in scripted television as an assistant editor on the hit Netflix series, Cobra Kai Character-building moments at a Spartan Race Getting hired on a scripted television series even though you don’t have the right experience Not being an expert at a job, but being able to find solutions to problems Making mistakes at work doesn’t define who you are Doing everything possible to not make the same mistake twice Learning new skills by simply talking to people and asking questions How episode 2 with Auggie Rexach influenced Chris Finding support through mentorship Chris’ experience working on season 3 of Narcos: Mexico Incorporating yourself into a new post production team Negotiating a co-editing credit as an assistant editor CLICK HERE to j Check out our free content and other resources! >>> SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts! >>> Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by Jesusdapnk Facebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnk Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnk Instagram: @jesusdapnk

Editor Dean Gonzalez has worked with some of my favorite bands (Pearl Jam, The Mars Volta, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and other creative artists that I admire (Danny Clinch, Mark Pellington), and has been able to make the journey from commercials to music videos to documentaries to feature films. In episode 19, Dean shares advice on how to become a versatile editor and maneuver a diverse editing career. He also share his experience editing the documentary What Drives Us , directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), which features some of the biggest artists in music like U2’s The Edge, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, St. Vincent, Flea, Ringo Starr, and many more recalling the early days of their career when they went on the road in a van. These legendary artists did what they needed to do to follow their dreams, so we’ll connect that idea with our own careers as editors. Dean and I talk about this awesome documentary, how editors can have success working on a variety of projects, how to avoid being pigeonholed, why it’s okay to suck to succeed, how to learn to trust ourselves, what you can learn from working on projects you’re not crazy about, Dean’s strategy for cutting music videos and documentaries, how he used DaVinci Resolve to edit What Drives Us, and much more. It's almost the end of the school year and some college grads will be looking to start a career in editing or post production. My guest on episode 18 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast is post production assistant Haylie Bantle, who was my first mentee of the Hollywood Editing Mentor program. Haylie graduated from college about a year ago right when the pandemic hit and was looking to pursue a career in post production in Hollywood. She signed up to work with me for eight sessions and before we got to finish all of our one-on-one virtual classes, she was able to find a job in Los Angeles in the middle of the pandemic while living in another city. In this episode, Haylie and I talk about our experience working together and what she got out of this program, what steps she took to secure her first job in LA, developing effective networking strategies, the benefits of having a mentor, the things they don’t teach you in film school, tips for creating a great resume, the importance of looking out for your own interests, and what her life has been like now that she’s been living and working in Hollywood. Haylie also shares her biggest piece of advice for graduating students that are looking to begin their editing career. Another great episode with a lot of practical information and real-life experiences that you can use to learn and develop strategies to start your own journey to achieving your career goals. Garret Donnelly is one of those editors that everyone wants to collaborate with not only because of his editing skills, but also because he's a pleasure to be around. He's always made it a point to do the best work possible while maintaining a positive attitude. It's safe to say that taking this approach has allowed him to move up the editing ranks quickly and work on such hit shows as Narcos: Mexico, NOS4A2, Knightfall, 24: Legacy, and Homeland . I was fortunate to be Garret's assistant editor on two shows and was able to co-edit an episode with him. He was also very instrumental in me being promoted to full-time editor and also getting my second editing credit. We became good friends and I consider him one of my mentors. I've learned a lot from him, everything from how to be a better storyteller to navigating office politics. In episode 17 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast, Garret and I talk about the three early stages of an editorial career in scripted television - becoming an assistant editor, getting promoted to editor, and landing the second editing gig. Being that he guided me through this process, Garret and I share practical advice through real life experiences that we've lived through either by ourselves or while working together. We're still talking about Netflix's The Queen's Gambit on the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast. Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera is my guest on episode 16 and he's here to talk about his experience scoring The Queen's Gambit and how he collaborated with Michelle Tesoro, ACE, who was on the previous episode of the podcast, and how Carlos met writer/director Scott Frank, it's a really cool story of how they paired up. We're also gonna get into the psychological concepts and principles that deal with career advancement, such as being humble and knowing your place in the work environment, as well as embracing mistakes and failures, and using these experiences to learn and overcome our fears. It's these principles that he learned from his upbringing that he has applied to his life and career and therefore has allowed him to find great success in Hollywood. Carlos and I talk all things The Queen's Gambit and music, but we also discuss the importance of effective communication and learning the language of film, dealing with imposter syndrome and taming the fears that can come with working in film and scripted TV, the biggest lesson he learned from being replaced on a project, and the idea that what we are shouldn't define what we make. A protegé of Randy Newman, Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafel Rivera's work for film and television includes scoring one of Netflix's most viewed and acclaimed shows in history, The Queen's Gambit . Additionally, he has scored Netflix's Godless , directed by Scott Frank and produced by Steven Soderbergh, starring Jeff Daniels and Michelle Dockery, as well as Universal Pictures' A Walk Among the Tombstones , starring Liam Neeson. One of my favorite shows from 2020 was Netflix's The Queen's Gambit , so it was great talking to Michelle Tesoro, ACE, who edited the hit series, on episode 15 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast. Carlos "Charlie" Viramontes and I met over two years ago through a mutual connection. He was living in San Diego and I was in LA. He was working at a local TV station editing sports promos and wanted to transition to scripted television, but had no idea how to do it. We stayed in touch and developed a friendship over time, until eventually I was able to put him up for an assistant editor position on a scripted television show. He got the job and is now doing what he always dreamed of. I feel Charlie is not only a good example of how to network, but also how to build relationships, which are very important in this industry. And it also shows that one doesn't need to be in LA to work in scripted television in Hollywood. In episode 10, Charlie and I discuss the following topics: How Charlie and I met over two years ago while we were living in different cities Charlie’s origin story, how he got a political science degree and got a job as an editor in sports marketing in San Diego Being ready to jump on opportunities The way Charlie and I got connected through his college professor Asking to meet with post production professionals by sending cold emails How offering to buy someone’s coffee can set the tone for that first meeting The importance of following up after having an initial meeting Asking for help and feedback instead of asking for a job Why it’s important to edit side projects Ways to connect with people Being open to having your work critiqued and not takes things personally Staying in touch with people Taking the initiative and being proactive to become a better editor Leaving your hometown to pursue a career in a different city Getting a job lead by developing a relationship and trust How your job in a different city could qualify you to join the Union in Hollywood Transitioning from marketing to scripted television Taking risks and not living with regrets Eliminating fear and learning from our mistakes Writing the proper resume to sell yourself for a job you haven’t done before Finding a way to shadow an assistant editor or editor Interviewing for a job you don’t have the experience for Finding the job that truly makes you happy Getting a last minute job offer in a different city and having to pack up and leave your home Communicating your goals to your employer Keeping healthy relationships with co-workers and not burning bridges Dealing with inconveniences by changing your mindset Feel free to share this episode with anyone that might find Charlie's story helpful and would also appreciate it if you left a review on Apple Podcasts by visiting hollywoodeditingmentor.com/review . Music plays a huge part in editing. The right song or score can enhance the emotion of a scene with its lyrics, tone, or tempo. It can also help with pacing and rhythm by speeding up moments or slowing them down. But what do editors listen for when picking a musical track to use in their projects? In episode 5 of the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast, I talk with editor Matt Colonna (who is also a professional drummer) about his process for choosing music for his cuts and how his experience as a musician helps him edit. Matt also talks about how he communicates his ideas about music with directors, showrunners, and the music department. As someone who is very supportive of his peers and always looks out for his team, Matt also shares some ways we can better manage the politics of the post production environment, and talks about the importance of standing up for ourselves and protecting our Union rights. Matthew V. Colonna is an American television and film editor whose recent works include Netflix’s Locke & Key, Narcos, Hulu’s Castle Rock and (currently) on FX’s The Old Man starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow—which will premiere in 2021. In 2010 he was nominated for outstanding single-camera picture editing for a drama series for Showtime’s Dexter and has as also received an HPA and OFTA nominations for his editing on Narcos and Fox’s The Following respectively. Matt’s also got and extensive music background that ranges from writing original music for Dexter to laying down beats for the Black Eyed Peas to mixing it up as music supervisor on a few indies. On the rare occasion, his band Sporto, will play live gigs is the LA area--but they’re usually writing music in the comforts of their air-conditioned studio (sparkoentertainment.com). A message from Matt Colonna: "As a twenty-four year editor, I’m honored to be a part of what Joaquin’s cooking up here and happy to share my experiences with ya’ll in hopes of cultivating an open forum to speak candidly about what we do for a living." Editor Rita K. Sanders and assistant editor Erin Wolf have been working together for 5 years on such shows as The Magicians (SyFy), You (Netflix), The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix), and Batwoman (CW). During their time together they have developed a strong relationship and an efficient way of working. Erin has also received several co-editing credits while working with Rita and is now looking to transition to being a full-time editor. In this episode they give advice on how you can build a better relationship with your editor and how you can go about getting a co-editing credit in scripted television. Rita K. Sanders began her career by editing television news in Austin, TX on tape-to-tape machines and has since cut feature films, documentaries, scripted and non-scripted television shows. Most recently, Rita edited on several season of SyFy's "The Magicians", Netflix's "You" and "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," and CW's "Batwoman"- which has been a dream come true for a nerd who loves fantasy, sci-fi and feminist agendas in media. Don't ask her about her philosophy of editing- she is still figuring it out. Erin grew up in Franklin, Wisconsin and knew she loved filmmaking from a young age. While studying film production at the University of Southern California, she developed a passion for editing. After graduating, Erin started as an intern and assistant editor in music videos before transitioning to scripted television. She’s worked as an assistant editor on The Magicians, Chance, and The Real Husbands of Hollywood, as well as co-editor on episodes of You, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Batwoman. When she’s not working, Erin enjoys playing with her two cats, listening to Taylor Swift, and binge watching Schitt’s Creek. The Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast is here! In the first episode, I have a conversation with editor Nena Erb, ACE about her Emmy-winning career in unscripted television and how she was able to transition to scripted shows and continue receiving accolades for her work. We also dive into the editing process of the episode she cut with her assistant editor, Lynarion Hubbard, on season 4 of HBO's Insecure , which recently landed them a shared nomination for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series at this years Emmys. Nena also shares how she is an advocate for mentoring and how she's actively promoting more diversity in the workplace. Raised in an Asian immigrant family, Nena Erb’s father wanted her to be a doctor and her mother wanted her to be a pianist with the LA Philharmonic. Nena wanted to be Andy Warhol. Armed with an art degree, a friend brought her into the industry and she started working in various capacities in production. It was her stint as an associate producer that opened her eyes to the impact of editing. It combined her love of photography and storytelling into one and she was hooked. Since then, Nena has been the editor on productions for HBO, Universal, ABC, CBS, Apple, and others. In 2016, she received an Emmy® award for her work on HBO’s documentary series Project Greenlight. In addition, she has received two ACE Eddie nominations for her work, one for HBO's Peabody award-winning series Insecure and the other for CW's acclaimed series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend . Her parents no longer ask her if she’d reconsider medical school. Hello, I’m glad you are here. My name is Joaquin Elizondo and I edit films and scripted TV shows in Hollywood. I want to tell you a quick story about how I got the idea to create this mentorship program and podcast. It took me almost 15 years to get to Hollywood. Not because I walked and swam here from the other side of the world, but because I followed a certain career path for that period of time before achieving my dream of editing films and scripted TV shows. From an early age I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker, but I never knew how to do it or if it was even possible. Watching the end credits of movies I would ask myself ‘How did those people get there?’ It might have taken me a long time, but I figured it out. As I took editing jobs in news, marketing, or talk shows, I realized that my excitement for these projects was short-lived. I quickly became creatively unfulfilled and got stuck in the comfort zone of making money. It didn’t matter how much I was getting paid because in the end I wasn’t happy. The reason I got into editing was because I wanted to make films and scripted TV shows, but I didn’t know how to break into Hollywood or if it was even possible. Years had gone by and I was only getting older. Was it too late to pursue my dreams? I knew that the only thing I would regret in my life is not trying, so I just went for it. Sometimes you just need to close your eyes and jump. And I’m glad I did because in the end everything turned out to be alright. I must admit it wasn’t easy. I committed a lot of mistakes, went through a lot of rejection, experienced emotional distress, and went through periods of self-doubt. What kept me going was my desire to discover what I was capable of and see how far I could push myself in order to achieve my goals. Now I want to pass along that knowledge to people trying to do the same thing. I don’t have any training in coaching or some fancy degree in psychology. I’m a guy who is relentless in pursuing his goals and wants to help people do the same. But I didn’t achieve happiness and success in my career alone. Throughout the years I’ve come across some amazing people that have offered valuable advice and guidance. That’s why I created the Hollywood Editing Mentor program. As someone who has sought out and benefited from mentoring, I’m now taking on the role of mentor by helping aspiring editors in navigating the path to achieving their career goals. I actively talk and meet with people who are looking for advice on how to get into and/or advance their careers in post-production. Not too long ago I was unaware of how to break into Hollywood and eventually found my dream job in the industry. I’ve been in your shoes and gone through the same struggles. The challenges and fears on this journey are real, and I want to tell you: “It is possible!” HollywoodEditingMentor.com Check out our free content and other resources! >>> SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts! >>> Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by Jesusdapnk Facebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnk Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnk Instagram: @jesusdapnk
