Season 4 focuses on Mahler’s Fourth Symphony in G major (1899-1900), which charts the journey of the soul from its earthly life to a heavenly one. Each episode is devoted to a movement of the symphony, followed by a concluding historical episode devoted to the reception of the Fourth Symphony when it premiered in 1901. Guests include conductors Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, and William Henry Curry; principal musicians of the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonic; scholars from Columbia University, Cornell University, Oxford University and the University of Athens in Greece; and starring James Lurie as the voice of Gustav Mahler, Laura Gragtmans as the voice of Natalie Bauer-Lechner, and Dominic Comperatore as the voice of Bruno Walter.
