With My Hero Academia coming to an end, it's time to reflect on the strange history of this iconic series. Once one of the most promising new shonen series after the famous Big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece), My Hero Academia was primed to usher in the next stage of the anime medium. But after some online controversies regarding the fandom and the emergence of a new wave of more mature and darker shonen like The Dark Trio (Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell's Paradise), My Hero Academia fell out of favour with much of the anime fandom. What's more, the super hero genre that helped the series find initial success became massively oversaturated, with 'super hero fatigue' contributing to the struggles My Hero Academia faced. Monster isn’t at the top of any anime lists. Whether this is due to its unconventional storytelling or darker cerebral tone , it’s these very same elements that set Monster apart from more popular anime as a rare masterpiece that doesn’t get enough attention. A mature crime thriller from one of the best mangaka’s of all time (Naoki Urasawa), Monster offers great storytelling in a grounded setting. This makes it a different kind of gateway anime, appealing to fans of true crime and thriller stories who may otherwise never give anime a shot. Despite being renowned as a masterpiece, Monster is often overlooked by anime fans. Returning guest Gerald Lillywhite is one of them, who joins the discussion fresh after finishing the series to offer his perspective as a writer. 🤖 See us live at 'MechaFest: An Anime Celebration' from 8-12 May at ACMI in Melbourne! Music brings people together. With anime, this takes on a whole new aspect. Rather than the power systems and fighting styles popularised in shonen anime, these series use music to tell their story. Whether it's a band coming together or a solo artist finding their voice, characters in music anime explore coming of age and finding community in a way that's uniquely relatable to real life.

In this episode of Gateway to Anime we talk about (in our opinion) underrated anime, that have either been somewhat forgotten through the passage of time, or simply not given the credit they deserve amongst the community. With an arbitrary criteria implemented (from MAL ranking and popularity scores) the gang go through shows they think are underrated and deserve more credit. You might just find your next favorite hidden gem!

We also talk through the connection between power systems and martial arts as well as which power system we'd most like to be apart of.

This week the gang gets together to talk all things mystery with the wide genre of detective anime. Sam talks through the history of detective fiction in Japan and the decidedly Sci-Fi flavor that tends to accompany these kinds of stories in Japanese storytelling. Sam and Charlie then go over some old ground with a couple of classic shows from our earliest episodes in Death Note and Psycho pass (we figured we've improved a bit since we first spoke about those shows in our early days). Graeme talks through Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and how influential it was on modern detective/Sci-Fi animanga. We also learn about the third highest selling manga of all time in Detective Conan, which turned out to be a huge blind spot in all our knowledge.

The gang get together to round-up their hits and misses from the anime winter season and then predict their future hit and misses of the now airing summer season. The season just gone became a bit of a surprise hit with everyone and the next season has big shoes to fill. We're back to check-in with how the Spring 2023 anime season is tracking. What are the heroes and what are the howlers? Sam regrets misreading a synopsis of a show in the hype-up episode that ended up being terrible. The big hitters are still hitting and the Rom-coms are at an all time high (much to Charlie's happiness). There's also a highly controversial and popular show which stokes a very interesting discussion amongst the group in Oshi no Ko. Listen to our mid season check-in now!
Apr 17, 2023
We preview the Spring 2023 anime season and talk about the shows we're excited about and what the community at large is talking about. These are all very early impressions of the spring season shows, some of which only had their first episodes air at the time of recording and some hadn't even aired at all. At the end of the season we'll be back with our verdicts on these shows. Sam previews a reverse isekai entitled: Dead Mount Death Play , as well as Heavenly Delusion and the Ranking of Kings OVA. Greame talks about Hell's Paradise (the final of the "Dark Trio" to get an adaptation) as well as the ludicrous Harry Potter meets Physical 100 Mashle and the returning isekai Konosuba. Charlie gets hyped about a litany of Romcoms like My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at Lv 999 as well as a "Breaking Bad meets Ozark" style show in My Home Hero . Demon Slayer Season 3 is the heavy hitter as well as the 2nd cour of Vinland Saga with Dr Stone S3 the other (lesser) returning popular show.

This will be followed up by our verdict episode at the end of the season and we will continue in this manner moving forward. Tune in for our verdicts on Vinland Saga, Bluelock, Tomo-Chan is a Girl, Stampede, Revenger, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, Nier; Automata and The Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel.

Sam and Charlie convinced long time friend and frequent guest Gerald to watch two of their favorite shows in all of anime. (One of) Sam's "undisputed kings of anime" the epic space opera Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Charlie's genre subverting "hard sell" Fruits Basket. While these shows both have fervent and dedicated followings and are renowned in the community, they aren't necessarily widely watched. Gerald brings his measured thoughts and opinions of these epic shows which leads to a deep dive of analytical discussion about what makes these shows so special.

Charlie examines the controversy surrounding the Trigun Remake Stampede (hint, more CGI) as well as the brilliantly titled Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague. Sam speaks about some video game adaptations of varying degrees of quality in Nier: Automata and The Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel - Northern War . We also discuss some heavy hitting returning anime in Vinland saga, Tokyo Revengers and The Misfit of the Demon Academy as well as several others which have caught our attention this season.

This is a special episode we recorded in Melbourne! We were down for Crunchyroll Expo and got to catch up with Sam's old friend Lachlan McAllister who owns Australia's first ever dedicated Esports bar, GGEZ (where this podcast was recorded). Sam and Lachlan started their anime journey together after Lachlan managed to track down a huge supply of VCD's containing the first 100+ episodes of Naruto back in high school (which Charlie also watched). However they started out playing JRPG's together in primary school. This episode is all about the deep connection between JRPG's and anime, how much crossover there is between the fandoms and how much they influenced our lives. We talk through the Suikoden series, Final Fantasy 7 (and Final Fantasy in general), the Persona series, Dragon Quest and many, many more.
Nov 25, 2022

Sep 26, 2022
Sammy interviews Ty Hanson, the creator of the Australian anime project Millennium Exile . Sam and Ty talk about the origin of the project, his ambitions moving forward and some of the influences which inspired the project. We of course talk about Ty's initial gateway to anime along with how he came to love the medium and Sam and Ty bond over their mutual love of JRPG's. We have an interesting conversation about what the term anime means in a modern context, the continual progression of cross cultural collaboration and why the future of the animation industry is so bright.
Sep 5, 2022
The gang gets historical, with Sammy on his crusade to prove "history is fun" to Charlie and Graeme. Veronica is a classically trained theatre actor from the United States and has had an extensive career as a voice-over actor in anime, video games and audio books. However the heavy hitters are firing on all cylinders.

Meanwhile Charlotte lays into a show she has hated since 2014.
