Whenever I have been asked what best prepared me for serving in elected office, I usually quip that before I got into politics, I served in a unit that specialized in unconventional warfare and counter-insurgency, and I'm amazed at how well that prepared me for domestic politics. It's, of course, half tongue in cheek, but there is no question that my time as a Green Beret taught me a lot about leadership.
