Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel discuss the life and career of triple Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian is regarded by many to be the greatest F1 driver of all time. He was ferociously quick, fearless in wheel-to-wheel battle and a master in the rain, but also willing to resort to underhand or even dangerous tactics to win. Senna died aged only 34, leaving his home country and the entire motorsport world bereft. He is one of only a handful of F1 drivers to truly transcend the sport and become a prominent figure in society as a whole. Andrew remembers the time he rode with Senna at Silverstone in a Honda NSX, and how impressive he was behind the wheel. THE INTERCOOLER DAILY PODCAST! From manual transmissions to naturally aspirated engines, analogue cars are the most rewarding and enjoyable to drive. Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel discuss the ways in which car manufacturers really make money. Very often the profit margin on the car itself will be very small, but the profit on optional extras can be significant. At the top end of the market, the likes of Ferrari, Bentley and Aston Martin are generating huge revenues by offering ever greater levels of personalisation, from bespoke colours and finishes to entire one-off builds. Indeed, those high-end manufacturers now have whole departments dedicated to optional extras and personalisation. This Christmas we have recorded a very special single episode of our acclaimed Last Blast podcast. To deliver this unique episode we needed a guest of international renown, made famous through achievements in both the road and racing car worlds. Who better, then, than Professor Gordon Murray, designer of multiple World Championship-winning Formula 1 cars, creator of the McLaren F1 – the car which expanded the envelope of road car performance more than any other – and whose latest design, the T.50 seems likely to rewrite the rules all over again? In an interview lasting over 90 minutes with The Intercooler's Andrew Frankel, Gordon takes us right through his career from his earliest days racing in South Africa, his decision to come penniless to the UK and the accidental interview that kicked off one of the most illustrious careers in race car design. Then he takes us through how the F1 came about, his struggle to reconcile his vision for the SLR with that of Mercedes-Benz and why he packed it all in to go and create his own automotive engineering and design consultancy.
