Stanley Kubrick went all out for what would become his final picture— and it’s nothing like you’d expect. Its subtext descends into Dante’s Nine Circles of Hell then does a U-turn at the corner of Pop Culture and Reality. Christopher Nolan would ask you, “Are you watching closely?” Kubrick assumes the impossible, that the viewer may, like the film’s lead character, Bill Harford, like the rest of society, have their Eyes Wide Shut . Enjoy another deep dive courtesy of Sophia and Nick as they venture through a disconcerting yet convincing New York City at Christmastime with the most powerful couple of 1999: Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. They break down the most important scenes, quotes, characters, and timelines as Bill and Alice play their marriage mind games. Sophia and Nick return for an historic episode to discuss the director with the most Oscar wins and the first to win consecutively: John Ford. Revered by many filmmakers throughout history and known for his Westerns, Ford blazed a trail that also showcased his Irish background, his actors- many of whom also won Oscars- and the fractured American Dream. They begin with a thorough history of his illustrious career before reviewing The Informer , the 1935 film for which he won his first Oscar. Even though he didn’t win for Stagecoach four years later, he was successful the following year with The Grapes of Wrath (28:34). Steinbeck’s classic novel created a perfect tapestry for his next directorial feat. There’s neither a dull moment nor a wasted breath in this week’s feature— only a flaw in the iris. Nick and Sophia are excited to share a thorough deep dive into Chinatown , an exemplary film from 1974 brimming with eyes and oranges and water (oh my!). They discuss how the Academy awarded it only one out of its eleven nominations, and even debate if it should’ve won some of The Godfather Part II ’s wins instead (1:22:51). Along with its performance at the Oscars, they answer a deluge of creative listener questions that have them reimagining the cast had it been made in 1937 and today, donning the beautiful suits and blouses designed by Anthea Sylbert, and ranking Faye Dunaway’s hottest chemistry with some of her shining co-stars. July 21, 2023, is a date that will go down in cinematic history as one of the most successful and satisfying double bills ever that also inspired a cultural phenomenon like no other. There’s no denying George Cukor loved his leading ladies and was determined to let them shine. The proof? All three women were nominated- two won!- for the films Nick and Sophia talk about on this director retrospective episode. The Philadelphia Story touts a statuesque Katharine Hepburn vying for the hearts of multiple men (aspirational hot girl summer energy). Gaslight finds Ingrid Bergman terrorized by her husband’s insidious behavior, explaining the origin of the word “gaslighting” (29:52). In celebrating 100 Years of Disney, Sophia and Nick invite back Mickey Mouse connoisseur Ryan Lamb for a fun movie draft filled with animated classics, iconic characters, and lots of laughs. For a director that is still creating memorable gems, it is even more impressive to look back 30 years to 1993 when Steven Spielberg released two iconic films earning 10 Academy Awards! Jurassic Park wasn't his first fantastical adventure, but it sure did change the way we look at dinosaurs. Nick and Sophia marvel at its connection to The Exorcist , the fun it has with mixing genres, and all of the film's innovations before talking about his Best Picture and Best Director winning film, Schindler's List (30:54). This film feels more essential with each passing year while its timeless beauty and lessons continue to blow away audiences. Mariah Carey may already be getting out her stocking but here at Oscar Wild, it’s time for Noir-vember. With so many titles to choose from in this fatalistic genre/style of femme fatales, crime, and sharp lighting, Sophia and Nick decided to cover two of Billy Wilder’s shining noir films: Double Indemnity and Sunset Blvd. In the former, Phyllis and Walter come up with the perfect plan to defraud and murder her husband. It's no secret that scary movies and performances aren't usually recognized at The Oscars, so Nick and Sophia decided to right some wrongs and share their own picks. The only rule is that you can only choose a movie three times among the six major categories. First are all four acting categories, ranging in terrific performances from a faithful priest dealing with his own inner demons to a tortured wife trying to survive the terrors of a secluded hotel. Then, onto Best Director and Best Picture (39:40). Which masters of horror will make the cut? Can they agree on a Best Horror Film of All Time?
