Our 2025 season wrap-up episode is here. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins us to go through some of the news that broke since we were last on – Christopher Eubanks announcing his retirement and Jannik Sinner winning in Turin again. We look back at the Grand Slams and share our highlights from each one. There were some memorable matches as well as moments at all of them, but it feels like the French Open topped the lot. Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Taylor Townsend, Naomi Osaka, Ben Shelton, Gabriel Diallo and Arthur Fils (before injury) all had great seasons. Victoria Mboko’s incredible ascent up the rankings was really something to witness. So was Félix Auger-Aliassime’s resurgence. We close with what we’re looking forward to next year and some outlandish takes for 2026. (PS: studio time was running short, apologies!) Thanks for tapping in with us this year, we appreciate you all. Don't forget to rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. WTA Finals delivered some entertaining matches – especially Amanda Anisimova vs Iga Swiatek – but it was Elena Rybakina who went unbeaten in Riyadh, seeing off world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final and collecting a $5.2m cheque. The final unfortunately made the news for the wrong reasons after Rybakina refused to take a picture with WTA CEO Portia Archer during the trophy ceremony. We discuss. On the men’s side, the ATP Finals field was confirmed in the 25th hour after Novak Djokovic made everybody wait. The 24-time Grand Slam champion announced his withdrawal shortly after beating Lorenzo Musetti in a dramatic Athens final. We have three black men competing at the year-end event which is a first for Black Spin Global. In singles, World No 6 Ben Shelton and world No 8 Félix Auger-Aliassime are in the Bjorn Borg alongside Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev. In doubles, debutant Evan King and partner Christian Harrison, the eighth-ranked pair in the race, are in the John McEnroe group. To close, we share our predictions for Turin. Victoria Mboko, the Queen of Canadian Tennis, closed out 2025 in style winning her second title of the year in Hong Kong. The 19-year-old Canadian saw off Filipina Alexandra Eala and countrywoman Leylah Fernandez en route. Mboko, who started the year ranked 333 in the world, is now at a career high 18. The WTA Finals are well under way in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Defending champion Coco Gauff fell to Jessica Pegula in her opening match in the Stefanie Graf group. As did Jasmine Paolini, against Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff versus Paolini is now a must-win match for both. Madison Keys, playing for the first time since the US Open, is also in action. The Australian Open champion is in the Serena Williams group alongside Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina. In the doubles event, Paolini and Sara Errani are the top seeds in the Martina Navratilova group alongside debutant Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs. Second seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova are in the Liezel Huber group. Félix Auger-Aliassime played himself into an ATP Finals spot with his run to the Paris Masters final. The 25-year-old Canadian, who currently occupies the eighth and final place in the Race to Turin, lost to Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s championship match. Sinner returns to No 1 in the world. World No 6 Ben Shelton also qualified for Turin following his run in Paris where he lost to eventual champion Sinner in the quarter-finals. To close, we share our thoughts on the ATP adding a 10th Masters event to the calendar from 2028.

This is another celebratory episode in response to Coco Gauff’s incredible run to the Wuhan title. “Big Coco, never the little one” won all of her matches in straight sets at the WTA 1000. It’s the American’s second crown of the year following her French Open triumph earlier this season. The 21-year-old world No 3 now has 11 singles titles to her name, including two majors and three WTA 1000s (and don’t forget the year-end Finals title last year). Jasmine Paolini also did herself proud in Wuhan with a 6-1, 6-2 statement-victory over Iga Swiatek – a player she had never beaten before – in the quarter-finals. Paolini was beaten by eventual champion Gauff in a competitive semi-final. The Italian is now in Ningbo looking to secure a WTA Finals singles spot. To close we share our thoughts on the family affair in Shanghai – shout out to champion Valentin Vacherot and his runner-up cousin Arthur Rinderknech. We also ask why it’s proving so difficult for guys to step up in the absence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.” Don't forget to rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. Naomi Osaka fell short to an impressive and in-form Amanda Anisimova in a very entertaining semi-final which followed a three-set thriller between defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula. Osaka made a bright start but was pipped by the eighth seed who was able to hold her nerve and maintain her level in the deciding set. Take nothing away from Osaka, who has had a superb fortnight and has a top-20 ranking to show for the brilliant work she has put in during this North American hard-court swing. In the women’s doubles final, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova fell to third seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in straight sets – 6-4, 6-4. The top seeds were three-love-down in the second set and fought their way back into proceedings before the New Zealand-Canadian duo eventually saw them off. Regardless, it has been an incredible, “life changing” tournament for Townsend who made a run to the fourth round in singles, taking out a Grand Slam champion and the world No 5 en route and was within a set of beating Barbora Krejcikova. In the second men’s semi-final, Felix Auger-Aliassime gave a good account of himself in a four-set defeat to defending champion Jannik Sinner. The 25-year-old Canadian looked a completely different player to the one that was outplayed by Sinnner in Cincinnati last month and was hanging with the world No 1 from the baseline. Auger-Aliassime, who returns to the top 20, can now focus on his wedding before returning to the ATP Tour where it feels like a another breakthrough is imminent. Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova are through to the women’s doubles final after dominant performances in the last eight against Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez and then another straight-sets victory against Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova in the semi-finals. They will play third seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe in the final after the Canadian-New Zealand duo took out second seeds Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani. In singles, Felix Auger-Aliassime came through a four-set scrap against eighth seed Alex de Minaur to book his place in his second US Open semi-final. The 25-year-old Canadian had to be patient against the world No 8 but managed the match brilliantly. FAA has his swagger back and we are very excited to see what the Canadian does in the semi-final. In the second women’s quarter-final of the day, Naomi Osaka beat 11th seed Karolina Muchova in straight sets in another smooth performance on Arthur Ashe. Osaka was brilliant in the first set and stayed solid in the second after Muchova was showing signs of a fightback. The four-time Grand Slam champion, in the middle of another deep run in just her second tournament with new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, will play eighth seed Amanda Anisimova in the semi-final. Taylor Townsend pushed two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejickova close in an epic three-set battle on Louis Armstrong. The American had eight match points but was unable to convert. The doubles world No 1 still has unfinished business in New York with doubles partner Katerina Siniakova. Felix Auger-Aliassime is looking more and more like the top 10 player he was back in 2022. The 25th seed took out 15th seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets on Arthur Ashe in the opening match on Labor Day. FAA, through to the last eight in New York for the first time since 2019, is playing with a swagger that can carry him a long way. In the day’s most anticipated match, Naomi Osaka was too hot to handle for third seed Coco Gauff. The two-time US Open champion saw off the American 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes to set up a quarter-final clash with 11th seed Karolina Muchova. We cannot wait for Osaka vs Gauff when both players are in peak form. Listen out for post-match press snippets from Auger-Aliassime and Gauff. Credits: US Open Tennis Championships. Coco Gauff beat Magdelena Frech 6-2, 6-3 in the first match on Arthur Ashe. The third seed, who said she “felt a lot lighter going on court”, put up some good numbers against Frech. Stat sheet made for nice reading for the 2023 champion, too. Was nearly perfect at the net 10/11, won 71% of points on first serve and only hit four double faults (one in the first and three in the second). Naomi Osaka handled (15)Daria Kasatkina in three sets – 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 on Louis Armstrong. The two-time champ was near flawless in the first set, had a wobble in the second after Kasatkina raised her level, but locked back in during the third set to close out the match and book her place in the second week. The Japanese shared her thoughts on facing Gauff. Felix Auger-Aliassime took down third seed Alexander Zverev in four sets – 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 – in a performance that took us back to the days when FAA was a top 10 player. The Canadian was teeing off from the forehand wing and was evidently loving the conditions in New York, which he alluded to during his post-match presser. Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez are going strong in doubles, they beat Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi 7-6(1), 6-1. So are top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova, who beat Alycia Parks and Dayana Yastremska 6-3, 6-3 on a packed Court 12. Credits: US Open Tennis Championships. Taylor Townsend picked up from where she left off against Jelena Ostapenko, this time seeing off world No 5 Mirra Andreeva inside a busy Arthur Ashe stadium. Townsend was an example of staying in the moment, recovering from an early break down in the first set and seemingly going on to cruise in set two. The doubles world No 1’s stardom continues to rise. Now to the defeats, Jasmine Paolini fell to Marketa Vondrousova on Grandstand. The Italian seventh seed was the better player in the first set and had two looks at a break point but was unable to convert. The second set was a complete switchup, and to Paolini’s credit she admitted nerves got the better of her. Frances Tiafoe, the 17th seed, had no answer for qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, who took the American down in three sets. The two-time US Open semi-finalist was unable to create any real openings and was not looking to make any excuses afterwards. And finally, Ben Shelton, the sixth seed, was forced to retire against crafty Frenchman Adrian Mannarino at two sets all. Shelton, who left the court in tears, appeared to have hurt his left shoulder. The 22-year-old was able to put things into perspective in his post-match presser. In a match that had three sets written all over it coming in, Naomi Osaka beat Hailey Baptiste in straights – 6-3, 6-1. The American made a nervy start and was unable to force her way into the match as a result of Osaka’s level which was ultimately too good. We asked about her tactics. Gabriel Diallo lost out in three close sets to Jaume Munar. The Canadian 31st seed was unable to take control like he has done in previous meetings against the Spaniard. Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Roman Safiullin 6-1, 7-6, 7-6. FAA seems to be finding his confidence in New York. His next opponent is third seed Alexander Zverev. The head-to-head is one-sided in Zverev’s favour, but the Canadian has beaten the German in their only meeting at a Grand Slam. Our last match of the day was Coco Gauff versus Donna Vekic on Arthur Ashe. Many expected a three-setter but the American third seed got things done in straights. She was emotional both during the match and during the on-court interview, but was incredible in her post-match presser. To finish, we talk doubles where Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez got their campaign off to a winning start, as did top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova. Only one place to start, Court 11 that was packed for Taylor Townsend’s upset-victory over (25)Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian took the L badly and resorted to some pretty derogatory insults, accusing Townsend of having “no class” and “no education”. Townsend handled the situation superbly, both on court and in press afterwards. To think all that happened on HBCU Live Day, that was brilliantly acknowledged with a great discussion in the morning on the legacy of Althea Gibson. Leslie Allen, Sloane Stephens, Kamau Murray and Boris Kodjoe were on the panel that was excellently moderated by Monica McNutt. Frances Tiafoe saw off big-serving qualifier Martin Damm in four sets. Big Foe had to stay patient, but took care of business on his side, served great and played smart against the lefty who he spoke highly of in press. Jasmine Paolini, playing her second night match in a row in New York, convincingly beat Iva Jovic in straight sets. The Italian seventh seed confirmed the dress was a night-session fit and spoke about her next opponent Marketa Vondrousova. Ben Shelton beat Pablo Carreno Busta in straights. The American looked very comfortable on Louis Armstrong and managed the match well which is something we put to him in his post-match presser. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard fell to 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti in four sets. GMP entered the US Open following a run to the semi-finals in Winston-Salem so the game is in a good place. Felix Auger-Aliassime saw off lucky loser Billy Harris in straight sets but the match had plenty of momentum swings. The 25th seed spoke about the tricky conditions and the role of the crowd. FAA will play Roman Safiullin next after the Russian beat fan favourite Gael Monfils in five epic sets on a packed Court 5. The night session was all about fashions and heart. Naomi Osaka, wearing an all red night fit, saw off Greet Minnen in straight sets, while Coco Gauff, who was also donning red, eventually got past Ajla Tomljanovic in a topsy turvy three-setter. In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, sixth seed Madison Keys lost to Mexican Renata Zarazua in three sets. Regardless of this result, however, 2025 will go down as a career-season for the 30-year-old American. Taylor Townsend beat Antonia Ruzic in straight sets on a busy Court 11, in a display packed variety and court craft. Townsend will face fellow doubles specialist Jelena Ostapenko in round two. Clervie Ngounoue showed incredible heart to recover from a bagel first set before falling in three to 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya. The 19-year-old American has an exciting future ahead. Frances Tiafoe did his thing against Yoshihito Nishioka on Arthur Ashe, beating the Japanese in straight sets. Big Foe threw down 19 aces and ended the match in style with two unreturnables in a row. Venus Williams, “the inventor of tennis”, gave the Arthur Ashe crowd a show in a thrilling three-set defeat to 11th seed Karolina Muchova. Lucy was in awe. In a late one on Court 12, Gabriel Diallo handled business against Damir Dzumhur in four sets. The Canadian 31st seed managed the match superbly after a lapse in concentration cost him in the second set. Finally, Alycia Parks was ruthlessly dispatched by fifth seed Mirra Andreeva in a match the American struggled to get in to. Listen out for post-match press snippets from Keys, Townsend and Tiafoe. Lucy and Eugene recap Day 1 at the US Open, which fell on a Sunday for the first time. Ben Shelton opened proceedings on Arthur Ashe, seeing off Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse in straight sets – 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The American sixth seed was untroubled and looked locked in from the first ball and handled business the way a top-10 seed should in the opening round of a Grand Slam. Afterwards, in a nod to the celebrations taking place to celebrate trailblazer Althea Gibson at this year’s US Open, Shelton was asked whether his father and coach, Bryan Shelton ever spoke about any racial issues he faced growing up as an aspiring professional. Buse spoke about how difficult it was to get a read on the American’s serve that was not only coming in with pace, but also different variations. In our second and final match of the day, Jasmine Paolini took care of business against Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava, winning 6-2, 7-6(4) on Louis Armstrong. The seventh-seeded Italian, steamrolled the first set, before going down an early break in the second. But in typical Paolini fashion, the Italian No 1 broke back immediately, firming up her game before closing out the match in the tiebreak. Afterwards, Aiava shared her surprise at the weight of the Italian’s groundstrokes. We asked Paolini about her thoughts on the Sunday start. To close, we talk about Serena Williams introducing Maria Sharapova for the Russian’s Tennis Hall of Fame induction and run through the matchups we are looking forward to on Day 2. Listen and watch out for post-match press snippets from Shelton, Buse, Aiava and Paolini. Credits: US Open Tennis Championships

The likes of (3)Coco Gauff, (6)Madison Keys and (7)Jasmine Paolini are among the top 10 seeds in the women’s draw. While 18-year-old US Open debutant Victoria Mboko is seeded 22nd in just her third ever Grand Slam. Two-time champ Naomi Osaka, who looked back to her best in Montreal, is the 23rd seed. Gauff starts against Ajla Tomljanovic, Keys faces Renata Zarazua, Paolini takes on Destanee Aiava, Mboko faces two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova and Osaka starts against Greet Minnen. Venus Williams, still going strong at 45, has been awarded a wildcard as has 19-year-old Clervie Ngounoue and both have drawn seeds in the first round. Venus has (11)Karolina Muchova, while Ngounoue has (29)Anna Kalinskaya. Doubles world No 1 Taylor Townsend has drawn Antonia Ruzic, Hailey Baptiste will face doubles world No 2 Katerina Siniakova and Alycia Parks, who went deep in Monterrey, has an exciting first-round match against (5)Mirra Andreeva to look forward to. Listen and watch out for pre-tournament press snippets from Gauff, Paolini, Shelton and Tiafoe.

In another celebratory pod, Lucy and Eugene bask in the glory that went down at the Canadian Open where there was success on both the singles and doubles courts. Victoria Mboko, the 18-year-old Canadian wildcard, completed a fairytale run at her home WTA 1000 going all the way to the final in Montreal and winning the title. The new world No 24 took out Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina before beating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the final. Osaka also played some good ball during her run to the final. The former world No 1, who returns to the top 30, saw off numerous seeds en route to the championship match that was somewhat overshadowed by events post-match. We share our thoughts. Staying in Montreal, Coco Gauff and McCartney Kessler won the doubles title. The American duo, who were linking up for the first time, beat Washington Open champions Taylor Townsend and Shuai Zhang in a thrilling final. Over in The Six (Toronto), Ben Shelton, the new world No 6, handled business. Shelton, a Masters 1000 champion for the first time, came back from a set down to beat 11th seed Karen Khachanov in the final. The 22-year-old American took out world No 4 Taylor Fritz and world No 8 Alex de Minaur en route. To close, we talk Cincinnati Open which began on Canadian Open finals day. “We love this game! Lucy and Eugene are back after a little rest post-Wimbledon. Before recapping the brilliant Washington Open, we share our thoughts on Naomi Osaka parting ways with Patrick Mouratoglou. Osaka will be working with Iga Swiatek’s former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski for a trial period starting in Montreal. Venus Williams was the story at the Citi Open. The 45-year-old brought the crowd and excitement to DC and made more history in the process. Taylor Townsend is the new doubles world No 1 following another title in Washington. Townsend is the first mother to be crowned world No 1! Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe met in the quarter-finals and the match delivered. Action now turns to Canada where Coco Gauff, Madison Keys and Jasmine Paolini are among the top seeds in Montreal. In Toronto, Arthur Fils makes his long-awaited return. Shout out to Iga Swiatek, double-bagelling Amanda Anisimova in the ladies’ final in 57mins. The Pole is now 6-0 in Grand Slam finals which is quite bossy. Also, shout out to the men’s champion Jannik Sinner who came back from a set down to see off defending champ Carlos Alcaraz in four – these two are playing a different sport. Lucy was spot on with her men’s take (she knows ball), while Eugene had Anisimova as his second pick. From a BSG perspective, Ben Shelton reaching the quarter-finals, where he lost to the eventual champ was very good going – went one round better than last year. The American is up to a career high world No 9 in the rankings. Hailey Baptiste making a run to the third round on her singles main-draw debut was also a standout. Her second-round match against lucky loser Victoria Mboko was a nice moment. Naomi Osaka looked good on the grass and had opportunities against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round three. Glad to see the four-time major winner already hitting on the grounds at Flushing Meadows. Gabriel Diallo gave a good account of himself on his debut, very nearly taking out eventual semi-finalist Taylor Fritz in five sets in the second round. Big shout out to 2024 ladies’ doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova who bowed out in the semi-finals this year. Congrats to Siniakova for securing the mixed doubles crown though with Sem Verbeek. We absolutely loved celebrating the 50th anniversary of Arthur Ashe winning Wimbledon with the oral histories before each episode during week 1! The Wimbledon Watchalong at PlayBox, BoxPark was such a blast and year 3 at the Championships overall was a great experience. We feel blessed and privileged to be part of the growing community of podcasters in this space – shouts out to Tennis Weekly, Quality Shot and Tennis Unfiltered. Ben Shelton fell to world No 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets – 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 – on a busy No 1 Court. The American 10th seed, who admitted he felt under pressure on serve throughout the contest, was up a mini-break in the first-set tiebreak before Sinner rattled off six points in a row to win it. In set two, Sinner, who was rocking a sleeve on his right arm, was in the zone. Serving at 4-5, Shelton got broken which handed the second set to the Italian. The third set was on serve until 4-5, with Shelton serving to stay in the match. Sinner turned up the heat on return and broke the American for the second and ultimately final time. In his post-match press conference, we asked Shelton to reflect on reaching the *quarter-finals or better at all four of the Grand Slams at the age of 22 (Shelton corrected us as he is yet to reach the last eight in Paris). We did have something to celebrate after defending women’s doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova booked their spot in the semi-finals after a 7-6, 6-3 win over 10th seeds Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani Rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. Before we get into the action, massive big up to everyone who showed up and showed out for us at Boxpark Croydon on Sunday (Day 7). We had a blast and it was a pleasure meeting you all. Ben “10” Shelton is through to his first Wimbledon quarter–final after a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory over Lorenzo Sonego. The head-to-head now reads 4-1 to the American. The 10th seed made a sluggish start and dropped his first set of the tournament to the Italian who he was facing for the third Grand Slam in a row. Shelton recovered well in the second set, winning it 6-1. At 1-1, Shelton held from 15-40 down and took over after that, breaking Sonego in the next game, then holding with ease before breaking the Italian again en route to securing it. The third set was a much tighter affair. The pair exchanged breaks at 3-3, then both held until 6-6. It was one-way traffic in the tiebreak with Shelton wrapping it up 7-1. The fourth set followed the third, both men were holding comfortably until Sonego, serving to stay in the match at 5-6, fumbled. Shelton hit a clean return winner at the start of the game and would eventually break the Italian for a fourth time to seal victory. Jannik Sinner or Grigor Dimitrov await in the last eight. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins in Lucy’s absence to go through the day’s action. Hailey Baptiste versus Mirra Andreeva did not feel like a 6-1, 6-3 match. The American, playing on No 1 Court for the first time in her career, made a nervy start but tightened things up in the second set. Baptiste though can be proud of her third-round run at Wimbledon on debut. The 23-year-old American is trending in the right direction in the rankings and has “a game made for the natural surfaces”, according to Tumaini. The Guardian man also shares his thoughts on Iga Swiatek-Danielle Collins, which was the match he was assigned to for the day, and also talks about the Aryna Sabalenka-Emma Raducanu third-round match that took place on Day 5. In the final match on No 1 Court, Ben Shelton looked good against lucky loser Marton Fucsovics. Shelton, making a habit of winning in straight sets at SW19 this year, won 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2. The match felt like it was on American’s racket from ball one – even in the second-set tiebreak, a devilish slice backhand set the American on his way to stamping further authority on the match. The 10th seed will face Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round. It will be the third Grand Slam in a row the two have faced each other. Listen out for a post-match press snippet from Shelton. We also talk you through a funny/awkward exchange between the American and a US-based journalist. Ben Shelton needed just 71 seconds to get the job done against Rinky Hijikata – 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. The American 10th seed served out the match to love, and with an ace on match point, to book his place in the third round. Lucy asked Shelton to talk about the technical changes he has made this season and how they have impacted his grass-court game. The 10th-seeded American’s next opponent will be Marton Fucsovics after the Hungarian lucky loser won the one-set shootout against Gael Monfils final score was 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. This match was also carried over from Day 4 after being suspended for bad light. La Monf got broken at 2-2 and was unable to recover. In his post-match presser, Monfils spoke about what he thought went wrong in the decider. Naomi Osaka made a great start against Anastasia Pavlychenkova taking the first set but lost in three – 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The four-time Grand Slam champion trailed 0-3 in the second and third sets, before drawing level but serving at 4-5 in the decider, Pavlyuchenkova broke and took the match. Osaka was understandably low during press but did give a positive, upbeat answer in response to a question from a Japanese journalist. Madison Keys, the sixth seed, lost 6-3, 6-3 sets to Laura Siegemund which was in keeping with the top seeds falling in the first week at SW19 – Aryna Sabalenka is the only top-10 seed left in the top half of the women’s draw. Was a puzzling defeat for the American who seemed to struggle with the German’s variety. Listen out for post-match press snippets from Shelton, Monfils and Osaka. It was a later start for us today and the match we were most looking forward to did not disappoint. Wimbledon main-draw debutants Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko faced off in the second round and it was the American that came out on top winning 7-6(6), 6-3. Mboko led in the first set and even built up a lead in the tiebreak, but Baptiste’s fighting spirit and experience saw her through. Ben Shelton and Rinky Hijikata will finish their match on Day 5 after bad light halted their second-round encounter. Shelton was leading 6-2, 7-5, 5-4 and actually had three match points at 5-3 on Hijikata’s serve but the Australian managed to hold. The American 10th seed will serve for the match on Day 5. Gael Monfils lost the first set against Marton Fucsovics but put things right in the second, winning it 6-1. La Monf won the third 6-4 and served for the match at 5-4 in the fourth before Fucsovics broke back – the Hungarian went on to take the set in the tiebreak. They will play out the deciding fifth on Day 5. Felix Auger-Aliassime fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets – 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-3, 6-4. This match started on Day 3 but was suspended due to bad light. It was a tough loss for the Canadian who was looking forward to the prospect of facing defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the third round. We had rain on Day 3 at the Championships which caused a slight delay to proceedings. When play did begin, Madison Keys wasted no time against Olga Danilovic, winning in straight sets. Naomi Osaka also secured an impressive straight-sets win over last year’s ladies doubles champion Katerina Siniakova. Felix Auger-Aliassime took the first set against Jan-Lennard Struff before the German secured the second. Their match, tied at one-set-all, was suspended due to bad light and will resume on Day 4. Elsewhere, last year’s runner-up and this year’s fourth seed Jasmine Paolini fell in three sets. Frances Tiafoe lost to an inspired Cameron Norrie in four and Gabriel Diallo, involved in the match of the day, went down in five epic sets to fifth seed Taylor Fritz. It was another sizzling day under the sun at SW19 and it started slowly for us in terms of victories, but we did see the likes of lucky loser Victoria Mboko more than make the most of her opportunity. Hailey Baptiste, the Canadian’s next opponent (skull face emoji) also came back from a set down to win on her singles main-draw debut. In the men’s draw Ben (10) Shelton secured his first-ever straight-sets win at SW19 while Gael Monfils upset 18th seed Ugo Humbert in a five-set epic – standard La Monf these days. Unlike Day 1, we did have several defeats on Day 2 where the likes of Christopher Eubanks, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Jay Clarke, second seed Coco Gauff, Heather Watson and Taylor Townsend among fell in the first round. Lucy and Eugene sing Victoria Mboko’s praises after her strong showing at the Miami Open where Jasmine Paolini – “The Queen of Italy” – made a run to the semi-finals after taking out Naomi Osaka en route. Osaka, who saw off Hailey Baptiste in the third round, also turned in some good performances during her run to the round of 16. Florida girl Coco Gauff, who dished out a bagel, also reached the last 16. Arthur Fils made it back-to-back Masters 1000 quarter-finals, getting the better of Frances Tiafoe and world No 2 Alexander Zverev along the way, before getting done in by some unfortunate scheduling. Garrison, who spent the majority of her career inside the top 10, talks about her run to the Wimbledon final in 1990, being put in a box as an African American player, disparities in the game in her era and today, the coaching landscape (especially for women), Portia Archer running things at the WTA, athletes and mental health pressures and much more. The three-time mixed doubles Grand Slam champion also shares her thoughts on the US Open switching things up for 2025 and gives her former charge Taylor Townsend, the current doubles world No 2, her flowers. *Special shoutout to Michael Parks for the assist. Lucy and Eugene celebrate title winners Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is now a two-time champion on the ATP Tour in 2025, Evan King and Christian Harrison who secured their first tour-level doubles title in Dallas, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova (the doubles No 2 and No 1) winning their first WTA 1000 crown and Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani winning the title in Qatar. Mikael Ymer is back! The Swede, playing for the first time since Wimbledon 2023, won on his return to action in an ITF event back in January and has played Davis Cup and a series of Challengers since. The WTA Tour is the gift that keeps on giving this year. The latest WTA 1000 winners Amanda Anisimova and Mirra Andreeva prove anyone can get it. We discuss… We also share our thoughts on Serena’s cameo in the Super Bowl halftime show, Jannik Sinner’s three-month ban, Elena Rybakina and Emma Raducanu news and the US Open doing things differently for mixed doubles in 2025. Lucy and Eugene are joined by Christian Basnight, founder of Christian's Court, to review the 2025 Australian Open where Madison Keys secured her first Grand Slam title, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova did it again in women’s doubles and Ben Shelton made another major semi-final. We talk about Keys’s championship-winning run in detail, paying particular attention to her semi-final against world No 2 Iga Swiatek and the thrilling three-set final against world No 1 and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, and give the 29-year-old American her flowers for staying true to her game. Townsend and Siniakova, the top seeds in the women’s doubles draw, added to their Wimbledon crown to become two-time slam champions. We discuss Townsend’s incredible impact on doubles and her understanding of how poignant and important her achievements are. Coco Gauff, everybodies pick for best-dressed player, looked good during her quarter-final run where she fell to Paula Badosa. Despite talk from the “internet coaches” we saw marked improvements in the world No 3’s game, especially the serve – she finished second in the aces leaderboard which feels significant. Shelton, who lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the last four, had another great AO. Not only did the young lefty make an impact on the tennis court, the charismatic American also spoke out about the awkward on-court interviews he and some of his fellow players endured. We discuss. And to close we rate this year’s tournament out of 10 and reveal some of our other favourite moments. With week one of the 2025 Australian Open in the books, Lucy and Eugene go through all the action including No 3 seed Coco Gauff steamrolling through to the fourth round where Belinda Bencic awaits*. Listen out for who was pretty much spot on with their prediction for this match. Madison Keys, coming off the back of her title-run in Adelaide, has also looked very good in Melbourne. The newly-married American has made tweaks to her game, and her equipment, and it seems to be paying off. On the men’s side, Ben Shelton and Auckland champion Gael Monfils face-off in round four in what should be a thriller! La Monf has played inspired tennis en route to week two and Shelton has looked more impressive in each round. Naomi Osaka had to retire in the third round due to abdominal trouble but the four-time Grand Slam champion picked up two good wins. Jasmine Paolini, who may be carrying an injury, fell to Elina Svitolina in round three but is still going strong in doubles with Sara Errani. So is Taylor Townsend with Katerina Siniakova and Asia Muhammad in mixed with Andres Molteni. *Episode was recorded before any fourth-round matches were played. ***Apologies in adance, this episode is explicit. Happy New Year! The 2025 season is up and running and so are Lucy and Eugene who get into all the goings-on from an eventful first week. What’s the deal with Elena Rybakina and Stefano Vukov? The Kazakh tops our news round-up. Coco Gauff, the United Cup MVP, carries the USA to victory and scores another significant win against Iga Swiatek. Jasmine Paolini and Felix Auger-Aliassime also got their campaigns under way at the team competition. The ASB Classic (or the Black Girl Magic Open) in Auckland provided us with amazing tennis and some incredible storylines from Naomi Osaka reaching her first final post-maternity, to Robin Montgomery making her maiden WTA Tour semi-final. Mpetshi Perricard beat the “serve-bot” allegations with his brilliant run to the semi-finals in Brisbane. Frenchman showed he can play with variety and ingenuity in wins over Nick Kygrios, Frances Tiafoe and Jakub Mensik. Arthur Fils and Gabriel Diallo play Hong Kong and experience a mixed bag. Keep the comments and likes coming guys. And please continue, sharing and subscribing! Feel free to leave us a review too. Lucy and Eugene, joined by friends of the pod Tumaini Carayol and Uche Amako, go through the highs and lows of the 2024 season. Does tennis have a doping problem? Iga Swiatek serving a quiet ban was not the best look, nor was Jannik Sinner testing positive earlier in the year. The Grand Slams (and the Olympics) provided a lot of joy, especially the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open – shout out all the winners and Jasmine Paolini for reaching back-to-back finals. Naomi Osaka was involved in a match-of-the-year contender as were Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton. Outlandish takes for 2025 include a new major winner on the women’s side and someone coming out of retirement to play doubles at Wimbledon. Merch: https://blackspinglobal.com/collections

The Orange Group contains Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula and Barbora Krejcikova. Taylor Townsend will also be making her debut at the Finals in the doubles event with Katerina Siniakova. Lucy and Eugene talk Laver Cup where Team Europe were victorious, but Team World’s Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton did record impressive singles wins over Daniil Medvedev. Changes in the coaching camps for Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek. Brand Patrick Mouratoglou joins up with Osaka and while technical guru Matt Daly steps into Gauff’s camp – exciting times ahead. Asian Swing has already provided us with a champion after Arthur Fils’s epic run in Tokyo where the Frenchman secured his second ATP 500 crown of the season. The 20-year-old beat multiple top 20 players en route, including a dramatic encounter against Shelton. Gauff did her thing in Beijing (had not played the final at the time of recording) played great tennis at the WTA 1000 including comeback victories in the latter stages of the tournament. We also shout out Hailey Baptiste, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Eliakim Coulibaly, and close with WADA's appeal against Jannik Sinner.

Retiring Donald Young and Taylor Townsend take the runners-up crown in mixed doubles after falling in straight sets to Italian third seeds Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. We appreciate Townsend acknowledging the significance of the presence of black players in the latter stages of the tournament during the trophy presentation. Frances Tiafoe’s nerve got the better of him in a thrilling all-American semi-final against eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz. Big Foe was the better player for the majority of the match but he admirably admitted afterwards the occasion caught up with him towards the end of the match. We salute women’s singles winner Aryna Sabalenka who beat Jessica Pegula in the final and Jannik Sinner who saw off Fritz in straights in the men’s final. Listen out for post-match snippets from Young, Townsend and Tiafoe and to close we share our favourite fits, matches and moments from this year’s Open and discuss whether Honey Deuce is actually better than Pimm’s. Lucy and Eugene sit down with #ChristopherEubanks in New York to catch up on his 2024 season which has been challenging but rewarding in equal measure. Among other things, the American talks us through his Davis Cup debut at the start of the year, the Paris Olympics where #CocoGauff was the star attraction, adjusting to life as an ATP Tour regular and his "excellent commentary" work for #ESPN at this year’s #USOpen where he’s starred in the booth and on-court with the mic in hand. Jasmine Paolini falls to Karolina Muchova in straight sets – the talented Czech was the more solid player throughout the encounter. Been a good Grand Slam season for Paolini who reached the fourth round or better at all the majors this year. Enjoyed her comments about having Anna Wintour watch her match. Frances Tiafoe, yet again, rises to the occasion and sees off Grigor Dimitrov who was forced to retire in the middle of the fourth set. Big Foe can look forward to his second US Open semi-final and an all-American matchup against Taylor Fritz. The Donald Young-Taylor Townsend feelgood story reaches the final of mixed doubles where Young will retire. Listen out for post-match press snippets from Paolini and Tiafoe and hear our thoughts on stewards allowing kids to run down and wait courtside for player autographs.

Coco Gauff goes down to Emma Navarro again, but this time in three. The 2023 champion’s serve deserted her at crucial times and she spoke openly about getting “other opinions” to help remedy the issue. Frances Tiafoe put on another show under the lights, fending off a comeback by the in-form Australian Alexei Popyrin in four quality sets. Big Foe is now looking forward to his third consecutive quarter-final in New York where ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov awaits. In the junior competition, Akasha Urhobo, Tyra Grant, Christasha McNeil and Matthew Forbes all secured first-round wins. And in women’s doubles, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova ousted Heather Watson and Asia Muhammad. Shout out to Anastaia from Ground Pass Pod for joining us.

Jasmine Paolini booked her place in the fourth round in comfortable fashion, seeing off fellow shorty Yulia Putintseva in straight sets. The Italian used the word “solid” to describe her performance which is exactly what it was. She has now reached the second week at all the Grand Slams in 2024 and is the first Italian woman in the open era to achieve that feat. Gabriel Diallo, playing in the third round of a major for the first time, showed he belonged at this level, going down in four sets to world No 14 Tommy Paul of America. The Canadian, ranked 143 in the world coming into New York, is on the brink of cracking the top 100 for the first time after a great US Open run and solid Challenger results in the lead up. Coco Gauff stayed the course against Elina Svitolina, coming back from a set down in similar fashion to the match she played against the Ukrainian in Auckland earlier this year. Good to see the reigning champ find good form heading into the second week in New York. Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton provide box office, primetime entertainment in the afternoon on Ashe as Tiafoe registers his first win against his compatriot. Novak Djokovic will not be his next opponent. Madison Keys fell in three and we also had a few casualties in women’s doubles. Taylor Townsend and Donald Young did get their mixed doubles campaign off to a winning start though. Listen out for interview snippets from Gauff, Shelton and Tiafoe.

Jasmine Paolini was through to the third round before we even got to the grounds after Karolina Pliskova retired due to a rolled ankle. Gabriel Diallo vs Arthur Fils did not disappoint and produced a result that we did not see coming. Two-time champion Naomi Osaka fell to last year’s semi-finalist Karolina Muchova but had her chances in the two-set defeat – she was in relatively good spirits afterwards during her post-match press conference. Listen out for interview snippets from Paolini, Diallo and Osaka. We had Madison Keys get things off to a winning start on Arthur Ashe, where Frances Tiafoe followed and looked impressive before Alexander Shevchenko retired. We’re getting the third-round matchup we all wanted after Ben Shelton got the job done against Roberto Bautista Agut. Coco Gauff played her first night match and handed Tatjana Maria a bagel en route to victory. The day did start (and end) with a defeat after Taylor Townsend fell to Paula Badosa on Louis Armstrong. Rain and thunder halted Gael Monfils and Casper Ruud but play did resume as we were recording – La Monf eventually falling in four. Listen out for interview snippets from Tiafoe, Shelton and Gauff. We also address the Marketa Vondrousova cornrows situation. Day 2 was special! Naomi Osaka provided two shows, a fashion show and a tennis show, on Louis Armstrong as she saw off Jelena Ostapenko in straights. Arthur Fils and Gabriel Diallo will do battle in round two after both won their first-round matches in four. There were defeats for Felix Auger-Aliassime and 18-year-old wildcard Matthew Forbes who looks like he has a bright future ahead. Listen out for interview snippets from Osaka, Fils and Forbes.

Our first day at the US Open is in the books, and boy… what a day it was! Ben Shelton, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend all won in straight sets, while Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe took the four-set route. There were defeats for debutant Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Christopher Eubanks who went down in five, and Sloane Stephens who fell after dishing out a bagel. Listen out for interview snippets from Shelton, Gauff and Townsend.

Lucy and Eugene big up Frances Tiafoe for making it to his first Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati – the American, back inside the top 20, fell to Jannik Sinner who escaped a ban after testing positive for a steroid that was unknowingly administered by his physio. Hear our thoughts and opinions. The final Grand Slam of the year (#USOpen) is here and we dive into the draw – Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini and Madison Keys are all seeded, third, fifth and 14th respectively. Seeds on the men’s side include Ben Shelton (13th), Felix Auger-Aliassime (19th), Tiafoe (20th) and Arthur Fils (24th). Notable first-rounds include two-time champion Naomi Osaka taking on 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko, Paolini against 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu. Shelton opens against 2020 champion Dominic Thiem and is projected to meet compatriot Tiafoe in the third round. As is tradition for Slam review pods, we reveal our picks for the men’s and women’s titles. For our merch https://blackspinglobal.com/collections

Lucy and Eugene shout-out Arthur Fils, Alycia Parks and doubles pair Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad who all picked up titles since we were last on. We share our thoughts on the Olympics and the huge role tennis played in the opening ceremony – great to see Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Amelie Mauresmo represent and what a time for Team USA flag bearer Coco Gauff alongside LeBron James. Props to Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani who won women’s doubles gold for Italy, Felix Auger-Aliassime who secured mixed doubles bronze with Gabriela Dabrowski for Canada – FAA also made it to the bronze-medal match in singles. American Swing is well and truly underway and Townsend is having herself a time in singles. Frances Tiafoe confirmed he is now working with David Witt, Naomi Osaka is back on familiar ground and continues to show good signs (admirably played Cincinnati qualifying). Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!

Ladies’ finals day did not disappoint, but it was not to be for our girl Jasmine Paolini who lost out to 31st seed Barbora Krejcikova in three quality sets. Paolini more than gave a good account of herself in a match that was a great advert for women’s tennis and doubles, as both had their moments with great net play. The Italian, understandably not as upbeat in press afterwards, was still positive about her incredible Wimbledon campaign and her remarkable 2024 season. In the doubles final, fourth seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova secured the title after beating second seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in two tiebreak sets on Centre Court. First-time Grand Slam doubles champion Townsend was emotional afterwards and both ladies were in great form in press.
Jul 11, 2024
Day 11 saw Jasmine Paolini book her place in her second consecutive Grand Slam final, and first at Wimbledon, after a three-set epic against Donna Vekic. The Croatian was the first to settle and took the opening set before Paolini upped it in set two to draw level and then persevered in the third to take it in the match tiebreak. The Italian was good vibes in press, as always, and spoke about how “crazy” it is to make two major finals in a row and also the prospect of facing Elena Rybakina or Barbora Krejcikova in Saturday’s championship match. We look ahead to Day 12 where Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova will be in ladies’ doubles semi-final action and Lucy reveals what she expects to see from the men in the singles semi-finals.
Jul 9, 2024
Day 9 was a historic one for our Italian-Ghanaian sister Jasmine Paolini who secured her place in the semi-finals with a fine 6-2, 6-1 victory over 19th seed Emma Navarro. The 28-year-old becomes the first Italian woman to reach the last four at SW19. Paolini is one match away from her second consecutive Grand Slam final but will have to get past Donna Vekic on Thursday. Listen out for presser snippets from a typically upbeat Paolini. Tumaini also shares some nice anecdotes from this year’s Championships.
Jul 8, 2024
Day 8 saw our young French first-timers Giovanni Mpetishi Perricard and Arthur Fils fall in the fourth round to two talented seeded opponents – (25)Lorenzo Musetti Musetti and world No 9 Alex de Minaur respectively. Birthday boy Mpetshi Perricard was in good spirits in press and spoke about looking forward to playing the US Open as a direct main-draw entrant. As for Fils, he shared his thoughts about playing on No 1 Court for the first time. Listen out for an interview snippet from Musetti who spoke about what it was like facing Mpetshi Perricard’s serve. We preview Jasmine Paolini’s quarter-final against Emma Navarro on Centre Court on Day 9 and highlight some juniors.
Jul 8, 2024
Day 7 was an eventful one, starting with the women’s match of the tournament thus far – Madison Keys vs Jasmine Paolini, where Keys unfortunately retired due to a left thigh injury. We then discussed Paolini’s next opponent for the quarter-finals, Emma Navarro who beat Coco Gauff 6-4 6-3, ending Gauff’s singles journey at SW19. We also get into Ben Shelton’s straight-sets defeat to world No 1 Jannik Sinner on No.1 Court – the American had not had a day off coming into the fourth-round. And to close we shoutout some of the doubles winners. Listen out for interview snippets from Gauff, Shelton and a funny one from Paolini.

*DISCLAIMER: Apologies in advance for the audio quality from Lucy’s mic* For Day 6 at Wimbledon, we are joined by Anastasia Folorunso from the Ground Pass Podcast, as Eugene is OOO for this weekend. We discuss the success of Frenchmen Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard making it to the fourth round for the first time. As well as Ben Shelton, who won another explosive five-setter against Denis Shapovalov. We also shoutout to the doubles matches and British junior Hephzibah Oluwadare who won her opening match today. Listen out for interview snippets from Shelton, Mpetshi Perricard and Fils.
Jul 5, 2024
Day 5 was a washout, for the most part, in terms of play on the outside courts but there were some top performances on No 1 and Centre Court where Jasmine Paolini and Coco Gauff picked up wins as well as Madison Keys (on Court 17). Frances Tiafoe versus Carlos Alcaraz lived up to the billing on Centre as the pair provided another five-set thriller. And Gael Monfils came up short against Grigor Dimitrov but was happy with his run at SW19 where he likes “the vibes”. Listen out for interview snippets from Paolini, Keys, Monfils and Tiafoe. Looking ahead to Day 6, Ben Shelton resumes against Denis Shapovalov and Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard play their third-round matches.
Jul 4, 2024
Day 4 was a good one in terms of weather, matches and wins for Madison Keys, Arthur Fils, Gael Monfils, Ben Shelton and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Robin Montgomery’s Wimbledon came to an end though but the 19-year-old qualifier gave a good account of herself on and off the court at SW19. Listen out for interview snippets from Keys, Fils, Shelton and Mpetshi Perricard. And looking ahead to Day 5, Frances Tiafoe gets his Centre Court wish, while Jasmine Paolini, Monfils and Coco Gauff all play on No 1 Court.
Jul 3, 2024
The weather put a damper on things, as play didn’t start on the outside courts until after 1pm, but Day 3 saw Coco Gauff, Frances Tiafoe and Jasmine Paolini all secure impressive victories. Gael Monfils also leads Stanislas Wawrinka. Christopher Eubanks and Felix Auger-Aliassime both came up short in different ways in the first round. While Sloane Stephens just has doubles to focus on now and Naomi Osaka can look ahead to the Olympics. Listen out for interview snippets from Gauff, Tiafoe and Paolini. And to close we go through Day 4’s order of play where Madison Keys, Ben Shelton and Robin Montgomery among others all feature.
Jul 2, 2024
Day two in the books that included monumental debut wins for lucky loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and qualifier Robin Montgomery. Ben Shelton and Arthur Fils also registered impressive victories in their own right. There were also tough five-set defeats for British wildcard Paul Jubb and Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer. And qualifier Alycia Parks fell short in her first-round match. Listen out for interview snippets from Jubb, Shelton, Mpetshi Perricard, Montgomery and Ymer. Lucy and Eugene, award-winning podcast co-hosts (salute to Tennis Black List), talk grass-court tennis and go through the Wimbledon 2024 draw. Naomi Osaka, Robin Montgomery, Christopher Eubanks and Arthur Fils all made quarter-final runs in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle respectively. Alycia Parks got back to winning ways in Gaiba, Italy taking the singles and doubles (with Hailey Baptiste) titles at the WTA 125. Parks carried that form over to Wimbledon qualifiers. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard impressed at Queen’s. Coco Gauff (Berlin), Paul Jubb and Gael Monfils (Mallorca) and Madison Keys and Jasmine Paolini (Eastbourne) all made semi-final runs. We’ll be on-site again at SW19 and will be bringing you daily audio pods just like last year. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!

We’re joined by Anastasia Folorunso from the GroundPass pod to talk all things French Open 2024 in a jam-packed show. Lucy was actually in Paris and managed to get a ticket to watch our Italian-Ghanaian sister Jasmine Paolini take on world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the final – Paolini is now the world No 7 after her dream fortnight in Paris which also included a trip to the women’s doubles final with Sara Errani. Coco Gauff picked up her first Grand Slam doubles title with first-time partner Katerina Siniakova. The new world No 2 also went deep in singles where she fell to eventual champion Swiatek in the semis. Naomi Osaka gave us the match of the tournament, and Swiatek the hardest of times, in the second round. We shout out Gloriana Nahum making history for Benin, American Tyra Caterina Grant and 15-year-old Moise Kouame who all impressed in juniors! On the men’s side, Felix Auger-Aliassime made it to the second week, things got heated between Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov and we urge France to allow young talents Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to cook! Lucy and Eugene give Jasmine Paolini her flowers after securing the doubles crown in Rome with Sara Errani. Naomi Osaka, or Clayomi (word to Shesaboutdone on X), picked up back-to-back wins against top-20 players, “world No 3” Coco Gauff reached the semis in singles and was runner-up in doubles with Erin Routliffe and Madison Keys backed up her Madrid last-four showing with a run to the quarters. Away from the main tour Arthur Fils picked up his second Challenger title in Bordeaux where he was the top seed and Elias Ymer reached the final in Oeiras. We also share our thoughts on the London-centric grass-court season in 2025, wish the retiring Dominic Thiem well, get into the French Open draw (super happy for qualifier Gabriel Diallo and proud of wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who backed it for little sis while doing his thing in Lyon). And of course we reveal our picks for the men’s and women’s titles. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!

Lucy and Eugene talk all things clay-court tennis, giving props to title winners Ben Shelton (Houston) and Sloane Stephens (Rouen). Madrid seemed to go on forever but it was good to see Felix Auger-Aliassime – no longer working with Toni Nadal – reach his first Masters 1000 final, Madison Keys make a run to the semis and wildcard Robin Montgomery give a good account of herself in three quality matches. We also look forward to Rome and Lucy states who she is siding with in this rap beef. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!

Lucy and Eugene talk Indian Wells and Miami, Q1 of the season and everything that has happened in between. Hear our take on Simona Halep 'bussin’ case' and her immediate return to action at WTA 1000 (all while the suspended Mikael Ymer is still retired). Angella Okutoyi of Kenya is Olympics-ready after winning the African Games – where she picked up her first-ever top 100 win – provided she cracks the top 400 in the WTA rankings by the cut-off period. Great Britain's Jay Clarke continues to build momentum after an eventful 2024, racking up wins on the ITF circuit in both singles and doubles. Vogue cover girl Coco Gauff, now 20, had a lot of ‘fans’ talking about her game during the Sunshine Double. We get into the unfair criticism that flies around on social media. Lucy and Eugene are joined by “best friend” of the pod Tumaini Carayol for this latest episode. We sing Jasmine Paolini’s praises after our Italian-Ghanaian sister’s dream week in Dubai – the WTA 1000 champion is now a top 20 player. Staying in Dubai, Coco Gauff handled herself with grace in a very teachable moment for umpire Pierre Bacchi. Naomi Osaka’s right where she needs to be in her comeback after a good showing in Qatar. Lime-bike-rider Heather Watson’s been grinding and checking off wins on the ITF circuit and the main tour. Gael Monfils is showing us he still has it at 37 and receiving his flowers in the process. Arthur Fils is over in South America getting reps in on the clay and building character – we share our thoughts on the Golden Swing. Felix Auger-Aliassime is starting to look like himself again as he looks to climb up the rankings. Frances Tiafoe, still finding his feet with new coach Diego Moyano, says tennis is the hardest sport in the world. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!

Lucy and Eugene give winners Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner their props for securing the women's and men's titles respectively. Coco Gauff made it to the last four and looked good doing so in her amazing New Balance fits, Jasmine Paolini reached the second week at a Grand Slam for the first time, Alycia Parks and Sloane Stephens also had good runs. On the men's side, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime reached the third round and both played eventful five-setters down under, while Frances Tiafoe, Arthur Fils and Christopher Eubanks all fell in round two. Shout out to girls' doubles champions Tyra Caterina Grant and Iva Jovic who made sure we were "leaving here with something"! Coco Gauff successfully defends her Auckland title, Taylor "Three-Peat" Townsend wins again in Adelaide with new partner Beatriz Haddad Maia and Naomi Osaka makes a winning return after 15 months away. Also, salute to the WTA and ATP for the new match-scheduling regulations announcement. AO draw (selected) – Jasmine Paolini is seeded for the first time at a major, two-time champ Osaka draws 16th seed Caroline Garcia in a blockbuster first-round and fourth seed Gauff could meet Alycia Parks in the third round. Seeds on the men's side (Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Felix Auger-Aliassime) all have tricky openers, Gael Monfils could play fellow father Andy Murray in the second round. Lucy and Eugene close out 2023 with a player who had a milestone-filled season on the ATP Tour. Christopher Eubanks tells us how his thought process changed after cracking the top 100 during the Miami Open (where a certain Jamie Foxx flew in to watch him), his whirlwind grass-court campaign that included a first ATP title in Mallorca and that run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Eubanks also gives us insight into his work with the Tennis Channel and the importance of having a current player’s perspective in the commentary booth. We discuss the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) and its role in attracting a new audience, match start-time preferences and much more. Merry Christmas! Lucy and Eugene – donning their “Call me Champion” tees – are finally joined by latest friend of the pod Uche to recap the 2023 season. Get excited about four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka’s imminent return as well as Rafael Nadal’s. Look back at memorable moments from all the majors (the WTA provided in a big way), as well as favourite matches, pay homage to the players who reached career-highs (the list is extensive), lowlights talk (mainly Mikael Ymer retiring). Look ahead to 2024 and share our outlandish takes for the season ahead. And to close we get to know Roger Federer stan Uche a little bit better. Lucy and Eugene look back at the weekend where we had involvement in four finals in one day. Shout out to Ben Shelton, Gael Monfils and Felix Auger-Aliassime for entering the 2023 winner’s circle. Antwerp runner-up Arthur Fils has the attention of a lot of people, not just new coach Sebastien Grosjean. We share our thoughts on the chaos in Cancun at the WTA Finals – Iga Swiatek storming the field, Coco Gauff getting her first wins at the “showpiece" event and Ons Jabeur making a brave statement. Also, we reflect on the Paris Masters and look ahead to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. And Ben Shelton’s phenomenal debut season continues as he makes deep runs in Asia. Clervie Ngounoue is the Girls’ champion after seeing off Nikola Bartunkova in straight sets in Sunday's final out on Court 12! The 16-year-old American did not drop a set all tournament. Class act! During recording, top seed Carlos Alcaraz and second seed Novak Djokovic were scrapping it out on Centre Court in the men’s final. (Shouts out to Carlitos) In the women’s final, our North African sis Ons Jabeur was unable to get over the line against Marketa Vondrousova. Big congrats to the low-key Czech. Interview snippets from Ngounoue’s press conference. And that’s a wrap, guys. Thanks for riding the Wimbledon 2023 wave with us!
Jul 12, 2023
Madison Keys falls to second seed Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 4-6 in what was by far her toughest test on grass this year. Sabalenka is playing some good ball at the moment and it was an experience witnessing her ferocious power and incredibly audible grunting on No 1 Court. Keys was upbeat in press afterwards, which was very nice to see. Christopher Eubanks’ dream run is over after another five-set epic against third seed Daniil Medvedev – 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, (4)6-7, 1-6. Eubanks made a nervy start but boy did he find his groove in sets two and three and went to six-all in the fourth but was unable to close out the match in the tiebreak. So immensely proud of Eubanks after this fortnight and excited for his future. Elsewhere, in the Girls’ draw Ranah Stoiber and Clervie Ngounoue are both through to the quarter-finals after impressive straight-set wins. The girls will be in action on Thursday. Interview snippets from Eubanks and Keys included.
Jul 10, 2023
Christopher Eubanks is a Wimbledon quarter-finalist after taking down fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five entertaining sets. The American who had the Gauffs cheering him on from his box, spoke in press about the people who have influenced his career. Daniil Medvedev, the third seed, is his next opponent. Madison Keys is also into the last eight after coming back from a set and 1-4 down against 16-year-old Russian qualifier Mirra Andreeva. Keys is now a two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist after her appearance in 2015. In press, the American was bombarded with questions centered around Andreeva which was a little jarring. Elsewhere, in the Girls’ draw Ranah Stoiber and Clervie Ngounoue are both through to the third round after getting straight-sets wins today. Interview snippets from Keys and Eubanks included.
Jul 9, 2023
Chrostopher Eubanks’ dream Wimbledon run continues after seeing off Christopher O’Connell in three tiebreak sets. The American spoke about his new-found affection for grass in his press conference while his fourth-round opponent, fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, revealed what he knows about Eubanks’ game. Madison Keys continues to cruise through the draw and upped her level against Marta Kostyuk in another straight-sets victory. Keys, who seems to be playing better than she did in Eastbourne, faces 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva next in what has the potential to be a quality match. Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Frances Tiafoe who had to play over two days due to the rain. The 10th seed eventually fell in straight sets to 21st seed Grigor Dimitrov. Understandably dejected in press afterwards, Tiafoe spoke honestly about not feeling any extra pressure following his rise up the rankings. Interview snippets from Eubanks, Tsitsipas and Tiafoe included.
Jul 7, 2023
Madison Keys books her spot in the third round with a businesslike performance, while Christopher Eubanks scores the “biggest win” of his career to secure his place in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Meanwhile, Mikael Ymer gets into another five-set tussle for the second day in a row but falls short after cooking Eugene in the opening set. Interview snippets from Keys’ and Eubanks’ pressers included.
Jul 6, 2023
Mikael Ymer and Frances Tiafoe book their spots in the third round in different fashion. While Arthur Fils, Alycia Parks, Michael Mmoh, Sloane Stephens and Ben Shelton all suffer second-round defeats. Interview snippets from Ymer and Tiafoe pressers included.
Jul 6, 2023
Sloane Stephens, Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys, Ben Shelton and Christopher Eubanks all bagged impressive wins to book second-round spots. While George Loffhagen, Jasmine Paolini and Heather Watson put in decent efforts before falling at the first hurdle. Interview snippets from Stephens, Shelton and Eubanks pressers included.
Jul 3, 2023
Alycia Parks v Anna-Lena Friedsam American looked impressive – first serve was firing and net-play was super clean which frustrated Friedsam who was visibly rattled towards the closing stages of the match. Parks has Ana Bogdan next who upset 15th seed Liudmila Samsonova. Michael Mmoh v (11) Felix Auger-Aliassime Massive win for lucky loser Mmoh who played an incredible match against a hampered but solid FAA who actually hit more winners during the tight four-set contest. Mmoh plays German qualifier Maximilian Marterer next. Eugene did go to FAA’s press conference where he spoke about his knee issue Laurent Lokoli v Casper Ruud Very entertaining match after a one-sided opening set, Lokoli fought his way back into it and took the second. Big congrats to qualifier Lokoli though who definitely won some new fans on Wimbledon debut. (7) Coco Gauff v Sofia Kenin Unexpected loss for the sixth seed (our pick for the women’s title). Qualifier Kenin came in hot and played extremely well. Gauff’s errors, on both wings, ultimately cost her and she alluded to that in her post-match press. Venus Wiliams vs Elina Svitolina Five-time champion hurt the same knee that caused her trouble in Birmingham against Camila Giorgi but pushed through. Ended up losing 4-6, 3-6, which was a respectable scoreline and she was in good spirits in press afterwards where Lucy asked her about her new coach Hugo Armando. Mikael Ymer v Alex Molcan We did not get to catch any of Ymer’s first-round match as it was going on at the same time as Mmoh, Gauff and Venus, but stats-wise his performances on day one – 39 winners vs 16, 81% 1st serve points won, 95% net-points won. Could get ninth seed Fritz next. Tuesday’s schedule Sloane Stephens vs Rebecca Peterson (moved from Monday) Heather Watson vs (10) Barbora Krejcikova George Loffhagen vs (6) Holger Rune (25) Madison Keys vs Sonay Kartal (10) Frances Tiafoe vs Wu Yibing Arthur Fils vs (31) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Christopher Eubanks vs Thiago Monteiro (32) Ben Shelton vs Taro Daniel

Lucy and Eugene – with accreditations around necks (allow us) – dissect the draws and recap events on the grass these past few weeks at Queen’s, Birmingham and Eastbourne. Venus Williams , the five-time champion, starts against fellow wildcard Elina Svitolina in one of the standout first-round matchups. Coco Gauff , seeded seventh, faces fellow American Sofia Kenin in another opening-round belter. Madison Keys , the 25th seed who had a brilliant week in Eastbourne, starts against British wildcard Sonay Kartal. On the men’s side, 10th seed Frances Tiafoe , winner on grass this season in Stuttgart, opens against China’s Wu Yibing. Debutant Ben Shelton is also seeded (32) and starts against lucky loser Taro Daniel. Felix Auger-Aliassime , seeded 11th, was due to face Filip Krajinovic at the time of recording but the Serb has withdrawn and been replaced by lucky loser Michael Mmoh. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins us in the studio for another fun episode. We share our Wimbledon accreditation news – yes, Black Spin Global will be at The Championships this year as media! Roland Garros men's "demi-finals" day was a lot of fun (courtesy of Rodney Rapson aka The Plug). Find out how we got on in Paris (and why Lucy calls it "The Ghetto") where Novak Djokovic made history after winning his 23rd Grand Slam. Tumaini also brilliantly articulates why Djokovic and Serena Williams should never be compared. On the women's side, Iga Swiatek secured her third Roland Garros title – second in a row. 22-year-old joins Naomi Osaka on four Grand Slams. Swiatek really did her thing again this year in an entertaining final against Karolina Muchova . Handshake-gate and fascinating behind-the-scenes insight regarding Aryna Sabalenka . Did the French crowd really understand what was really going on when the Ukrainian players refused to shake hands with Russian and Belarusians? Gael Monfils was talk of week one after his epic five-set victory over Sebastian Baez. La Monf suffered severe cramps and was 0-4 down in the fifth before coming back to take it. Was very emotional afterwards. Sadly withdrew the following day due to a wrist injury. Coco Gauff made a run to the quarter-finals where she fell to eventual champ Swiatek in straights. One of the better matches played against the Pole so far in their seven meetings. Also came through a nice three-set match with 16-year-old talent Mirra Andreeva in the third round. Also reached the women’s doubles semi-final. Frances Tiafoe was rocking a custom Nike + IDK collaboration kit which paid homage to his Sierra Leone roots – super clean. (IDK’s music goes hard too thoroughly recommend the F65 project) The 12th seed made a run to the third round where he fell to Alexander Zverev in four sets. Loved the win over Aslan Karatsev in R2. Sloane Stephens , who is "a good time in press", stunned in her FP Movement kit. That blue she was wearing in round two was an absolute scene. The 2018 runner-up made a run to the last 16 where she fell to Sabalenka in two tight sets in the one only women’s “night session” match this year. We share our thoughts on the sexist scheduling. We had success in doubles where Clervie Ngounoue and Tyra Caterina Grant secured the girls' doubles title after beating the top seeds in the final. Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez , looking pretty in pink, finished runners-up in the women’s doubles event. The American-Canadian duo are a serious team. Also shout out Kgothatso Montjane and Yui Kamiji – women’s wheelchair doubles champions. And Donald Ramphadi and Andy Lapthorne – Quad men’s doubles champions. And to close, bi-lingual king Tumaini talks about his seven-week stint on the road including his trip to Murcia, to carry out a Spanish interview with the people who knew world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz before he became That Guy! Nice long read is here: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/may/26/born-to-be-no-1-tennis-the-making-of-carlos-alcaraz Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all! #BlackSpinGlobal

Lucy and Eugene – in full 4K-colour-glory, for the very first time (head over to our YouTube channel)– talk all things clay-court season so far and much more. We get into Frances Tiafoe bagging his second ATP Tour title after an epic weekend in Houston. Alycia Parks reaching the third round in Madrid under the guidance of her father and coach Michael Parks . We shine a light on Elias Ymer , the first Swede to be invited to Harvard Business School, who had a good week in Marrakech after coming through qualifying. A lot went down in Charleston where Sachia Vickery , Hailey Baptiste , Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens all featured (shout out to the winner Ons Jabeur , our North African sister). We spend time talking about the stacked Porsche Tennis Grand Prix field in Stuttgart with Coco Gauff (no longer working with Diego Moyano ), Parks and Emma Raducanu – read our guy Tumaini Carayol’s article on the event’s limited field . Ben Shelton , aka the “Human Highlight Reel”, continues to wow the crowds in his first full season on the tour where he’s enjoying seeded-player privileges. Queen Serena Williams gets a shout out after her pregnancy announcement, we also give Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard props for winning his first Challenger Tour title. And finish up with our opinions on Rafael Nadal and his injury woes, Novak Djokovic being allowed in America and the ATP’s plans to adopt electronic line calling across all events from 2025. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments. *This episode was recorded on Wednesday 3 May #BlackSpinGlobal

Lucy and Eugene talk about what they’ve been up to, including applying for Wimbledon 2023 accreditation, interviewing Erick Mathelier ( Furi Sports co-founder) and also touch on Wimbledon’s decision to lift the ban on Russian and Belarusian players. Alycia Parks’ stunned in Lyon beat top seed Caroline Garcia in the final to claim her biggest title to date (WTA 250). Since then she’s been experimenting with her set-up – was working with Jarmere Jenkins during the Sunshine Double as well as strength and conditioning trainer Josh Evenden . Coco Gauff’s been going along nicely – reached a few quarter-finals, won a couple doubles titles with Jessica Pegula too including Miami where Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez were fellow finalists. Robin Montgomery secured her first win on the WTA Tour in Miami and then faced Madison Keys in the second round where she put up a good fight. Clervie Ngounoue won the prestigious girls’ event in Indian Wells. Ngounoue also won the doubles event with partner Qavia Lopez . Arthur Fils is about to crack the top 100 after making back-to-back semi-finals at ATP 250 level – picked up some big wins en route including one over Stanislas Wawrinka. Young Frenchman is such a joy to watch. Christopher Eubanks was the story in Miami and is now a top 100 player for the first time after a career fortnight at the Masters 1000 event where he reached the quarter-finals after coming through qualifying. Was very emotional after the win that confirmed his place in top 100. Frances Tiafoe reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final in Indian Wells – didn’t drop a set en route before going down 5-7, 6-7 to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev. Jill Smoller also has him signing all the endorsement deals too and rightly so. Felix Auger-Aliassime , defending champ in Rotterdam, reached the quarters – lost to eventual champion Medvedev. Went on to reach the semis in Qatar the following week where he lost to Medvedev again who went on to win the tournament. Gael Monfils returned to the tour in the US after seven months away due to a foot injury. Lost in the first round in Indian Wells and was forced to retire from his first-round match in Miami due to a wrist injury. To close, we quickly preview clay-court events in Charleston, Houston, Estoril and Marrakech. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments. #BlackSpinGlobal

Lucy and Eugene say good riddance to the 2023 Australian Open but not before giving props to maiden Grand Slam winner Aryna Sabalenka and 10-time AO champion Novak Djokovic. We discuss Ben Shelton's dream debut – the 20-year-old reached the quarter-finals and showed his match-toughness coming through a couple of five-setters. Shelton is now a top 50 player – No 44 in the current rankings. Michael Mmoh, who was hours away from leaving the country, reached the third round and recorded the biggest win of his life in the process – four-set victory over 13th seed Alexander Zverev. Shout out to Zack Evenden for giving us the backstory to that first-round win. Frances Tiafoe (and that incredible fit!) also reached the third round – fell to Karen Khachanov. There isn’t a look Big Foe isn’t able to pull off. Tiafoe is also at a career high 15 in the world rankings after his solid start to the season. Felix Auger-Aliassime, who was not playing his best tennis, still managed to reach the fourth round, before falling to Jiri Lehecka. He was the last man standing as well if we’re buying into the “Netflix curse” (listen up for our Break Point takes). Coco Gauff reached the second week – lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16, but did win all her matches in straight sets up until then. Her second-round match against Emma Raducanu had everyone very excited about the future/before and after. Madison Keys lost to two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Despite not protecting her semi-final points from last year, Keys seems to be in a good place after her solid start to the year after moving house. Ranah Akua Stoiber had a breakthrough tournament reaching the last four in the girl’s competition (her first Grand Slam semi-final). The 17-year-old Brit looks like an exciting prospect. Elsewhere, Mikael Ymer reached a Challenger final in Belgium, Arthur Fils, 18, reached a Challenger final in France, following his first title in Portugal earlier in the year. And to close, we talk about events happening in Thailand and Lyon where Heather Watson, Alycia Parks and Jasmine Paolini are all in action. Please subscribe and share your comments. #BlackSpinGlobal

Lucy and Eugene, joined by Myles David, get to know the Tuned Into Tennis founder a bit better as he shares his early memories of the sport and tells us why he started the platform. We share our thoughts on Naomi Osaka's amazing pregnancy news (Lucy suspected it). The four-time Grand Slam champion says she plans to return to action in 2024 and we cannot wait to see her back. Dive into all the action of 2023 so far and talk Australian Open draws.... Coco Gauff secured the ASB Classic title in Auckland without dropping a set. What can we expect from the seventh seed who starts against Katerina Siniakova in Melbourne? Taylor Townsend, unbeaten on the doubles court after winning the Adelaide titles (1 with Asia Muhammad and 2 with Luisa Stefani) is a wildcard and takes on fellow Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the first round. We give our takes on the United Cup. Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys, America’s No 2 players, both went undefeated (Keys is back inside the top 10 as a result and Big Foe is back up to his career-high ranking of 17). Keys, an AO semi-finalist last year, is seeded 10th and starts against Anna Blinkova. Tiafoe is seeded 16th and opens against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. Sloane Stephens, now working with Fransisco Roig (Rafael Nadal’s former alternate coach), is still searching for her first win of 2023 after first-round exits in Auckland and Hobart. Stephens, a semi-finalist in 2013, faces Anastasia Potapova. Jasmine Paolini has a 1-2 record heading into Melbourne after losing out in qualifying in Adelaide and in the second round (main draw) in Hobart. The Italian has a tough opener against 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova. Felix Auger-Aliassime lost in the first round in Adelaide to Alexei Popyrin. From there the Canadian went straight to Melbourne to prepare for the first Slam of the year where he is seeded sixth and starts against compatriot and PTPA co-founder Vasek Pospisil. Mikael Ymer has four wins under his belt ahead of the AO after making the quarter-finals of Adelaide 2 – beat Emil Ruusuvuori and Mackenzie McDonald en route. The Swede faces 31st seed Yoshito Nishioka in round one. Christopher Eubanks put in some good work in Auckland, beating the 2020 champion Ugo Humbert in round one after coming through qualifying. Wildcard Eubanks faces South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon in the first round. Staying in Auckland, wildcard Ben Shelton, playing in his first tournament outside the US, upset seventh seed Sebastian Baez 7-6, 6-1. The 20-year-old begins his AO campaign against Zhizhen Zhang. New name to look out for 28-year-old Frenchman Laurent Lokoli who came through qualifying. His father Dominique (French-Congolese dual national) played professional football for Paris St Germain and Auxerre in the 70s and 80s. Lokoli faces Goffin in round one. Lucy and Eugene, joined by friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol , recap the epic 2022 season. We share our favourite Black Spin Global moments – including getting accreditation for grass-court events (courtesy of the LTA) , our Eastbourne experience made extra special thanks to Jarmere Jenkins on Serena Williams's return (where Lucy got her journalism game on) and our day at Wimbledon. Retirement talk after legends Serena , Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all called time on their incredible playing careers. Some of faves had career-best years... Coco Gauff (year-end finals qualifier in singles and doubles) reached her first Grand Slam final and ended the year inside the top eight in singles and got to No 1 in doubles after winning three titles with Jessica Pegula . Felix Auger-Aliassime won four singles titles (including three in row in October), reached No 6 in the world and qualified for the year-end finals and helped Canada win the Davis Cup for the first time in their history. Frances Tiafoe reached the last four at the US Open, made two finals (Estoril and Tokyo), secured Team World’s first ever Laver Cup title and finished the year inside the top 20 for the first time. Ben Shelton turned pro after before the US Open. The 2022 NCAA champ ended the year at a career-high No 97 after going on a Challenger Tour tear winning three titles in a row. Alycia Parks *cracked the top 100 after we finished recording* got big wins in Ostrava en route to the quarter-finals as a qualifier and won the doubles title with Caty McNally . Honourable mentions for Taylor Townsend who returned to action after maternity leave and reached the US Open doubles final among other highlights, and Angella Okutoyi , the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam at any level after securing the girls’ doubles title with Marie Nijkamp . We also talk about what are we looking forward to in 2023? And share some predictions ahead of the 2023 season and much more. We recently caught up with friend of the pod Jordaan Sanford. Jordaan’s been super busy working as a body double for one of the lead actresses in the television drama series ‘All American: Homecoming’ on The CW. As well as putting her groundstrokes to good use, the Baylor University alum and ardent storyteller also serves as a technical advisor on the show. She breaks it all down for us. We also talk about her important role at the USTA Foundation where she’s been tasked to help grow their social media presence among other things. Don’t forget to subscribe and share your comments.

Frances Tiafoe and Felix Auger-Aliassime picked up pivotal wins to secure the title for Team World for the first time in five attempts! The match everyone was anticipating was the Friday night doubles with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal taking on Tiafoe and Jack Sock. The Americans got the win for Team World and Tiafoe was subjected to racist abuse on social media afterwards which was completely out of line! On the Sunday, Auger-Aliassime dispatched the Novak Djokovic in straight sets to put Team World in a winning position and just one match victory away from winning the Laver Cup for the first time. Enter man of the moment, Big Foe who lost the first set to Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-1 but rallied back in now typical fashion, taking the second-set tiebreak and closed out the decider to secure the title and his second win over the Greek in a row (third overall). "Greek Yoghurt" controversy… people were losing it on social media and criticising Team World’s behaviour during the Tiafoe-Tsitsipas match. Mic’s picked up Tiafoe, surrounded by Americans on the bench, saying he wants “that Greek yoghurt”. Other bits… Davis Cup – Ymer brothers picked some good wins for Sweden – Mikael beat Italy's Jannik Sinner and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina. Elias picked up an impressive win over Argentine Sebastian Baez. FAA also beat Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic to secure Canada’s place in the Finals. Gabriel Diallo (confident his Dad is from Senegal or Guinea TBC), a 20-year-old Kentucky Wildcats senior, also made his debut for the Canadians. WTA – Naomi Osaka withdrew from her second round match in Tokyo due to illness. Not sure if she will play again this season. Don’t forget to subscribe and share your comments.

The final Grand Slam of the year did not disappoint. Frances Tiafoe made a historic run (Lucy has all the stats) to the semi-finals where he lost to eventual champion and world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in five exhilarating sets. Big Foe, now a top 20 player for the first time, chalked off impressive wins against 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev en route and had the NBA and former First Lady Michelle Obama cheering him on. Coco Gauff reached the last eight in New York for the first time where she lost to in-form Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia. The American 18-year-old, now a top 10 player for the first time, outplayed compatriot Madison Keys in the third round and came through impressively against Zhang Shuai in round four. Lucy gives coach Diego Moyano his flowers. Serena, in her final match as a professional, lost to Australia’s Alja Tomljanovic in an epic three-hour tussle. The 23-time Grand Slam champion had everyone believing after her incredible performance and three-set victory over second seed Anett Kontaveit in round two. The GOAT also played doubles with sister Venus for the first time in a long time in New York – they did lose in the first round but it was a very special night. Taylor Townsend and Caty McNally came up short in the women’s doubles final, losing to seasoned campaigners Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in three sets. Our girl Taylor was rightly talking her ‘ish’ after the match which left us all excited about her 2023 season. There are also notable mentions for qualifier Christopher Eubanks who reached the second round, Grand Slam debutant Ben Shelton who gave a good account of himself, and juniors Victoria Mboko, Clervie Ngounoue and Ranah Akua Stoiber who all made deep runs. Charrisha Watkins, founder of Love In Tennis and now friend of the pod, links up with us for a collaborative episode. We talk college tennis at Gettysburg College; Tipsy Tennis and favourite drinks; favourite Grand Slams and much more. As we were last on just after Wimbledon, we catch up with everything that has happened since then, paying particular attention to Serena Williams announcing her “evolution” away from tennis in that beautiful Vogue essay. We share our thoughts on the GOAT and the legacy she leaves behind. We give huge props to Coco Gauff for reaching world No 1 in the doubles rankings after securing her second WTA 1000 title of the season in Toronto with Jessica Pegula. Madison Keys took out world No 1 Iga Swiatek in Cincinnati and went on to reach the semi-finals. On the men’s side, Mikael Ymer reached the last four in Washington. Felix Auger-Aliassime made back-to-back Masters 1000 quarter-finals in Montreal and Cincinnati. We also share our thoughts on NCAA champion Ben Shelton who announced he is turning pro. And to close, some on-brand – for the most part – US Open predictions. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments!

Lucy and Eugene are joined by friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol aka The Mentor. This episode is all about Wimbledon 2022! We celebrate girls’ doubles champion Angella Okutoyi who put Kenyan tennis on the map after becoming the first Grand Slam winner from the country. We also talk about the women’s and men’s finals, paying particular attention to Tunisia's Ons Jabeur and what her run means to Africa and the Arab world. From a Black Spin Global perspective, icons Serena and Venus Williams both competed – Serena in singles and Venus in mixed doubles with Jamie Murray. Was nice to see Venus at the Centre Court centenary celebrations alongside all the legends but Serena's absence did not feel right. We discuss. We give props to the wildly underrated Heather Watson, our guy Frances Tiafoe and the ever impressive Coco Gauff. Watson broke new ground at a Grand Slam after reaching the last 16 – she was also the last Brit standing in the women’s draw. Tiafoe, who was 0-2 on grass coming in, also put in a good showing and reached the fourth round for the first time. Gauff reached the third round in singles but went all the way to semi-finals in mixed doubles with Jack Sock. Don't forget to subscribe and share your comments!

Serena Williams is back! We had the honour of watching her return to action – with Ons Jabeur – at Eastbourne from her players’ box courtesy of our guy Jarmere Jenkins. We’re still buzzing! Black Spin Global was media accredited for Eastbourne, too. We talk about our experiences – Lucy casually asking Serena and Jabeur quality questions in press – and who we got to see while we were there – Mikael Ymer, Paul Jubb, Heather Watson, Jay Clarke, Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys among others. We also preview Wimbledon and dissect the draws; give thanks to the tennis Gods for decent-ish first rounds for our peoples. We reveal our picks for the men’s and women’s crown. Black Spin Global was officially accredited for this year's cinch Championships. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins for this quick episode recorded on day 3 in the Queen's Club press room. Eugene had the pleasure of seeing Brit Paul Jubb get two top 100 wins in qualifying and put up a good fight in a first-round defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp – spoke to Jubb in press afterwards. Also met Frances Tiafoe for the first time in person which was special. The American was involved in a high quality battle with Stanislas Wawrinka. Serena Williams is back! We talk about the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s return to the tour at Eastbourne where she is scheduled to play doubles with Ons Jabeur. Tumaini also talks about his French Open experience and how it differed from 2019 and Coco Gauff. Plus, a shout out for Alycia Parks who secured her first top 50 win in Berlin. Black tennis really shined in Paris this year (hence the title of this episode). We review a historic French Open for 18-year-old singles and doubles runner-up Coco Gauff. Our girl Taylor Townsend, a doubles semi-finalist, did her thing with Madison Keys. As did Sloane Stephens, who reached the quarter-finals and played beautifully in one of her favourite cities. We also talk about Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s emotional and well-deserved send-off; reveal why we think Felix Auger-Aliassime – the only player to take champion Rafael Nadal to five sets – should tell Toni Nadal to kick rocks; show Mikael Ymer and Frances Tiafoe some love for picking up momentous wins; and give a mention to some juniors who competed. And finally, we have exciting news regarding our whereabouts during this grass-court season… Shouts out to the Lawn Tennis Association! Don’t forget to subscribe and share your comments!
