Understanding a product better often helps its users to use it better. EP29 John Luke aka the Mad Scientist was a blast to talk to he is incredibly knowledgeable about many subjects obviously including timber stabilizing and colouring. After his career as a paratrooper he went on to join the army Golden Knights parachute team traveling the world doing competitions and demonstration. He then became a stay at home dad for the best part of 20 years and made knives for the sake of staying sane in between all the nappy changing and nose wiping. He quickly realized he wanted to start stabilizing in house. From there he spent time developing a system to allow him to get the results in the quickest time possible. Eventually allowing his work to be recognized all over the world. He gladly shares some of that with us in this interview. EP 27. Zac Is a wood turner and youtuber that makes and sells turning blanks for wood and pen turners amongst other things. He like myself has his fingers in many a pie. He has his YouTube channel where he does things like Dunkin Junk ( a series where he put anything and everything into resin just to see if it works), He also (with Casey from wine country pens ) does a podcast exclusively for resin casting. EP25 James Oatley is a knife maker from Sydney who mainly specializes in kitchen knives with an obvious Japanese influence. Managing to have very modern bright designs whilst still creating the traditional Japanese knife styles. His love of knife making came from a young age and we discuss some of the influences from that time that not only helped him start his journey but heavily influence how he makes now and his work ethos. James comes across as an easy going guy but is in no way lazy about his knives and his passion is clear. EP21 Bobby started out making knives 3 years ago after his wife fell ill, and he had to leave his long term career as a milk machinery technician. He found after some time that he was going stir crazy not being on the tools anymore. As a long term EDC'r he decided he was going to have a go at making a knife. After looking online he found a group that dealt with making knives with recycled materials. Which he has since become an admin of. His first few knives were made from chain saw bar. He also uses pre 1960's saw mill blades. He has learned to test them and get the best out of a blade. He is a man that is to be looked up to as he puts such energy into true hand made knife making. He talks us through his techniques on how he files his knives to shape and so much more. Tim Westley EP15 London Museum of Steam and Water. Tim makes kitchen knives concentrating on using recycled materials. Trying to make the smallest damage to the planet practically possible with his knifemaking. He cares that his knives are recyclable in the future as well as being made from recycled materials. He tries to live by a saying from chef friend of his Douglas McMaster. "Try to do something for the best not to be the best." Hdpe is low toxicity when melted and can be done in a household oven. Working with aluminum. Always looking for waste that can bee recycled into knifemaking materials. Makes hos blades out of san mai with wrought iron and a known steel core. He tries to keep his waste to a minimum by forging close to finished shape. Still uses a known steel core so he can be assured that the edge is going to stand up to the work it is going to be doing. His knives are designed to be recyclable as well as made from recycled materials. He does not spend any money on handle material and only buys one sheet of steel per year even though he makes over 200 knives per year. Carries out his work in the workshop in the museum where maintenance would have been done. We discuss its similarities to Eveleigh works in Sydney. He keeps his knives in a handmade steel chest. Looks at ideas to lower waste like data sheets on tea towels. Looks at knife making as resourcefully as possible to create less waste. You need to put some of your passion and outside life into knives to be different. Would like to see more people using recycled materials in their knives. Finding that one customer that will spend £1000 on a knife is a lot harder than finding 10 customers that will spend £200 on a knife. A custom knife maker only 3 years he has the skill set of a man who has been making for far longer. We discuss his transition from new maker to a highly respected damascus maker. "We are all trying to get the same spot and if we get there different ways that's fine". See the full blog at www.tobyfireandsteel.com What we spoke about. He has been a welder for 25 years before getting into Damascus and knife making. Started knife making after watching forged in fire. One day at work he told a friend that he was going to build a forge and it all came from there. He went on to build many of his tools including his forging press. The first big purchase he made was an Even Heat kiln. His real love is the damascas and he makes knives to warrant the time so he can sell knives to pay for the materials. Part of the reason he sells his damascas is that he loves to see what other people will do with it. Feels that technology is partly responsible for newer makers skills growing so fast. People often don't know they want a custom knife until they have used one. A knife can be a funny thing they can often carry memories like being handed down from father to son etc. His own son is in the navy and he made him and himself matching knives out of the same billet of damascus. He called his company after himself because he stands behind his quality. Talks about the transition from someone asking for advice to someone that people ask him for advice. Likes doing a collaboration with other makers. Knife making is about learning how to fix your mistakes. If you're not struggling a little on every knife you may be stagnant. We are all trying to get the same spot and if we get there different ways that's fine. Guys like Kyle Royer his attention to detail and precision is just next level. When heat treating sometimes its better to send it out to a company. The general public doesn't understand how much of the original steel ends up on the floor of the shop as scale. Best advice is to buy once and cry once. Links Bobs creator shout out Jeremy simple little life Bob Rankin links. Antony Richards Ep 12 Antony started out doing silversmithing and went onto do two degrees in design. Remembers in 1996 walking into an army surplus and buying a knife when you could carry a knife without issues. In 2012 he and his partner decided to go into business together where the decision was made that they would put time and energy into making products. In 2015 they had a house fire in their home which involved their office space. So, during the rebuild of their lives and home/ office. Recount how his father always wanted to be a chocolatier but never did and it made him want to do the person who doesn't get to do the thing that makes him happy. Works out of 2m x3m shed and decided that he didn't want to wait till he had a bigger shed. Fells he is in a very lucky situation that he is where he can make what he wants and has a partner that supports him. Feels that knives are the very integral to who we are now and historically. He started out making kitchen knives but realized that he wanted to make something different. As a designer, he looked at the idea of the knife as a problem that needed to be solved. Isn't looking to create art knives he wants to create a usable product. Is hoping to submit his 3 knives soon to become a member of the Australian Knifemakers Guild. Feels he kind of takes some of the accepted rules in knife making and pushes the, to dee if he can make them work. Workshops are like budgets you can work to what you've got as efficient as possible. Of always be wanting more. And never get anything done with what you have. The 18 cutlery co came from a tattoo of 18 in the palm of his hand. And the idea for that came from a manga movie (Akira). Talks about his initial design and starts out his ideas in small thumbnail size pics before he moves to full-sized drawings. Even then he still hasn't finished the design process till he has made the knife. In knife making for a short amount of time, does not appear to have slowed him down in his pursuit to create next-level imaginative themed knives. His past experiences in pottery, jewelry and woodwork amongst others have paved the way to him getting to where he is now. His knives show the ability to think outside of the box and create knives that don't follow the rules. What we spoke about Joshua got into bladesmithing originally after finding video and content from blacksmiths. He feels that his knives take their shape because of the skills that he brought from the other hobbies. He is excited by the ideas he has that give him themes. The reason he tends to make more than one of a knife is because he's expecting failures. He tends to not make themes more than once but also says, "never say never." He doesn't feel he has a style particularly. He pushes limits and styles so regularly. Made his first knife that he considers to be high level and is super proud of, 2 years ago. His work is split up between the basement of his house and his garage. He finds it very rewarding to dig back through his old unfinished knives and finishes them. If he's not happy with something it's usually the profile. Which you can always change. Within the preexisting damascus patterns, he looks for other ways in which it can be recombined. He never considers a pattern a failure. He likes to take a drawing into the forge with but will drift away if the process takes him to somewhere he likes. When working on the high heel show he had to balance the fanciful idea and something that conforms to what it requires to be used. He expects for his knives to be used and gets photos of them in use. Has ideas sometimes but eventually, knives are done when he is done working on them because it just takes so much to do. Over time he is trying to synthesize creativity with a conforming style and its hard to capture that. At some point, you just must give yourself permission to do what you want to an extent. The technical side needs to be spot on but taking a little bit of license is something we're all entitled to. Feels that Australia has a high concentration of highly skilled makers. It takes practice to design a knife as we all think we can draw a knife until we first try. Has considered making other styles of knives. Highly honored by what Steve Schwarzer. He recently decided he wanted precious stones in knives and spent countless hours setting his first. Purchased his first power hammer 3 years ago form Alibaba. Most of his stuff is done on his press, belt grinder, leg vice, and anvil. Has the same issue we all have doesn't have enough space and tools but he never waits he just finds ways to do stuff. Leaves all his early stuff on Instagram and doesn't want to remove things he doesn't think are too good. Doesn't curate too much but tries to keep his Instagram to knife-related stuff. Advice to new makers. Finish what you started. Henning Wilkinson is an amazing maker from South Africa who is responsible for possibly some of the best Damascus in the world. He talks about his journey in knife making and how God changed his life putting things in place for him and his happiness and brings him to this point. He is a qualified gunsmith and attributes his understanding of the intricacies in knife making to this. Making his first knife at a young age he moved on to damascus and developed a real dislike to stainless steel. Henning was taught by his father sand allowed to make his own mistakes as a child. He explains why he has such a dislike of stainless steel in his knives. Met Carrell Smith the author of a book called "pattern welding and coloring of damascas steel" David Dorem "folding knives" book His life changed when he saw a picture of Steve Schwarzer's picture of the hunter and the dog. He realized he needed to rethink his skill and processes. When the government changed, and the electricity companies stared load sharing. His family business could not supply the money for his business. After praying for a job, he got one which seemed right but quickly realized it wasn't right for him. He tells us about his struggles when working in a well-paid job that was crushing his soul. There were a few moments that changed his heart and mind when a customer purchased the contents of his table at a show. He won 4 categories out of the 5 he'd entered in the next show. The day he decided to quit his job even know he wasn't sure they could afford it. A customer called him and asked him to make a $10,000 sword. He has the drive to create only great things and can't bring himself to make mediocre knives. Talks about when he decided to make a keyhole knife. And the blessing he got with access to an EDM wire cutter. How he became an urban legend in his break of not making knives. Often has to ask himself "how I made this, how did I do it"? He feels he has to attribute it God. How he comes up with his Damascus patterns. He often gets his inspiration from sword from history and then puts his own spin on it. Doesn't work on guns anymore as he needs special licensing. This is your drinking beer and this your sipping beer (Bjorn Jacobson) We talk about how massive the knife making community is in South Africa. Looking to do the Paris show depending on coronavirus. Hoping that Blade show happens this year so he can beat Kevin Slattery in the arm-wrestling comp. He is a member of the South African knifemakers guild for forged blades using the ABS testing system. Looking to do an integral sub hilt again soon. If you want to push your self have a big project running at the same time as your day to day knives. He designs and makes all his knives for what he likes not to impress other people. He wants people to push themself to do amazing things. Nothing is impossible. Who worked out that cow urine would work as flux. Being afraid to waste your time or money is what stops people from growing. Talks about when Steve Schwarzer came to visit him in South Africa. Don't not do things because people tell you that you can't. Kyle Royer who is a master smith from America came over to Australia to the Blade Symposium to teach his skills to the Australian knife makers. He also ran a masterclass on mosaic Damascus for 4 days after the Symposium. Having tasted what Australia has to offer food, views, animals, the bush and of course knives. Jamie Bishop from Sausage Man Forge has a walk around and chats to some of the makers who attended the Blade symposium to see what they thought. How he has found his trip in Australia. Bushwalks and tourist areas in Sydney. How he found teaching live as opposed to online teaching and online courses. Getting to see the knife that someone made from his takedown bowie course. How Josh Royer is very responsible for masking the video and online stuff happen. Josh filming and having his camera tethered to a projector screen so over 70 people could watch like they were next to him. He enjoyed the knife sharpening competition and thinks that people should do at things like hammer ins. He talks about the work he will be doing when he gets home involving the other half of the mosaic billet he made for the show. Potentially making another sword after he's back to America. Chats about why he likes the show at Little Rock Arkansas. What it's like to have people come and show him their knives everywhere he goes. Tells us what he learned from knife makers specifically Jackson Rumble. We discuss the ABS and passing on tradition and skills from one maker to another. The time it took for him to go through the ABS system. He says he's very humbled to have been asked to com Kyles Master Yoda ending. Make your metal flat and keep your forge hot. Who is Kev Slattery? A knife maker, teacher and the president of the Knife Art Association. Since leaving the IT industry, Kev Slattery has become a well-recognized part of the Australian knife making community. This throwback interview was recorded at last year's symposium for YouTube, so I thought it fitting to share it for the first time with this amazing podcast community. What we spoke about Kev has been a full-time knifemaker since leaving his job as a systems administrator approximately 7/8 years ago. Behind every fulltime knifemaker is a partner with a well-paid job. He got into knife making when he asked his wife for a knife course for his birthday instead of the usual car parts. When teaching knifemaking courses, he does 2 knives so students can learn and then reinforce their learnings. He talks about a way he has chosen to teach his students. Knifemakers don't make mistakes we just make smaller knives. How to set out his workshop instead of just putting the most recent tool in next. His favourite knives to make are hunting knives, but also makes others like kitchen knives. Getting tips from master smiths at Blade Show and making changes to your knives. Disk grinders. Started out grinding knives on a belt sander. Grinding belt use rotation. How Kev's pricing structure works. Knife show etiquette and what to expect. When a show spectator uses you Australian Knife Makers Guild Patch as a coffee coaster. Acidic fingerprints on a carbon steel knife. Being a full-time knifemaker, how he manages to get out and keep sane. You start making knives out of scrap steel, people start dumping scrap steel on your driveway. Buy steel, buy a grinder and make knives. You can get a false perception of how good your knives are when you have nice friends. I see some of my old knives and I'd love to get them all back and replace them. Such an interesting and fun knifemaker to talk to from Cork Ireland. Sam Dunn's skills can be recognized all over Instagram and certainly have been by the Irish chef community. He is so passionate about the design, form and function of his knives, and cares about the end users experience, and is considering it, when he is working on his knife designs. What we spoke about Like most knife makers he sold to friends and family first. Sells to 1 of 2 markets in the last 12 months, Irish chefs and international Instagram sales. If you can get in with one or two of the chefs, they start to sell for you to an extent. Your knife roll is your toolbox, no different to a bricklayer with a trowel and plumb bob etc. If you start off with a bad design, how is it ever going to be a good looking knife? 5 min - Before you start hacking and grinding, spend your time with a pencil paper and a ruler. 11 min - If it looks crap on paper, how's it going to look good in steel? Your first 50 knives will be of a certain standard but the next 50 will be better. He only uses a pencil, ruler and paper and that other tools for design have too much say in the final design. We talk about options like Knifeprint to design blades. Uses A4 paper in the diagonal to draw on instead of A3. Can fit an 8" chef knife on an angle on A4. Describes his process for designing and drawing his knives. Designing a knife with an even flow. Talks about designing K tips, Japanese or western knives. The processes of designing a knife when a customer is involved. Often gets potential customers to look back through his Instagram portfolio to take ideas from his style. Talks about the honesty of the 'giving credit where it is due' to other makers. Talks about how grateful makers are when you ask to use their IP. Borrowing Don Wynn's handle styles. How I shape my contoured handles 34 mins link to contour handle video below. The importance of giving back to the community by helping newer people online like others did for you in the beginning. Favorite type of knife is a K tip Signature blade is an 8" k tip His design process involves him knowing the materials and colors etc. 53 mins - You get nice boots, a nice coat comfortable car but you by a crap $8 knife, why? There's a direct proportionality between the cooking process and a quality knife that you don't get with crap knives. 55 mins - The effect on people with great quality knives. How the knife laws in the UK seem to not affect Ireland. How it affected the EDC community in the UK. Has some absolute gold advice on designing knives and where to get inspiration from. Stuart Kerr is a knife maker from Queensland with a bit of a difference. 8 years ago he wanted a straight razor made and couldn't find one for an affordable price, so he decided to make one. Over those years he became the go-to guy for straight razors. He makes beautiful clean classic looking razor's but is possibly best known for crazy and amazing exposed vertebra dragon-esk razors. Stuart is not afraid to push the boundaries of what is possible and has many 'one-off' custom designs flowing from his mind onto paper. He continues to want his work to stand out and perform, always looking for new and different material for his handles and expanding his range of steels he works with. Stuart will be at the Blade Symposium this year in Canberra so make sure to say hello. What we talk about. He didn't like normal razors for shaving. A friend got him onto 2 edge razors and he was interested in straight razors. Found straight razor place forum. Asked for a price from some makers and found the prices were too high, so he decided to make his own. Grew up out in the country and was handy. Was always good at shop A and shop B at school. Was a metal fabricator building heavy machinery. After making a couple of razors for himself, people started asking him to make them one. Makes most of his blades out of 'O1 steel'. "Every time I make a razor for my self, someone wants it" He's been making blades recently from San Mai. Have only made a few knives and finds them a completely different animal to make. Enjoys the challenge and will be joining the Australian Knifemakers Guild. The skeletal looking blades all came from a single custom that a customer asked for. The balance between the ergonomics and looks of razor and what pushes the boundaries between the 2. Hand delivering a customer's order to Italy. The thickness of the spine vs. the depth of the blade is so important. The geometry of the bevel is set by the thickness of the spine. Owns about 20-30 vintage razors. Spent real-time studying them. Western style razors are center edged and have 2 hollow grinds. Why it is so important for the wedge in the handle to be correct. Why the scales are tensioned like a leaf spring. Handle construction and pin placement. Tried to get Hugh Jackman on board for a wolverine collaboration. His reasons for the name boxer custom razors. You got to love Boxer dogs. Nitrous and oxide. After 8 years of making, his first show was last year in Sydney. Razor prices range from $400 up to $1800. How family life works with knife making and how he finds time to make. Time escapes you when you are making. Knifemakers are that "weird knife guy" in outside life and razor guys are the same. The different tooling required for razor makers in comparison to knife makers. Most of his razors are ground on a 4" small wheel. 8 8ths of an inch. 1' no? Most of his razors are folding and why. He's coming to the 2020 Blade symposium. Looking forward to meeting Kyle Royer. Chatting about the Blade Symposium. Makes his scales in pares stuck together. A serious problem with material acquisition disorder. Has drawers and drawers of handle materials. He has had to unfollow some handle suppliers because he can't help buying. A lot of knife block standard sizes aren't long enough for razors. If you're going to have a go at razor making don't start out with really complicated stuff. Kyle Royer is a highly respected American master smith, making knives from 14 years old after being encouraged by his mum. He is a skilled maker who believes in sharing what he knows, doing a lot of free content including YouTube and Instagram; he has recently released a very detailed course on the making of a Bowie knife. We talk about growing up in a home school family, being a knife maker, YouTuber, the Blade symposium and so much more. As a family run enterprise with his mum doing most of the Instagram amongst other things, and his brother doing the video work, they have a dynamic that most companies do not have. At the Blade Symposium, Kyle will be teaching several classes and a mosaic Damascus master class, and his brother Josh will be teaching social media for knife makers. What we talk about. How long it takes to make knives and film it. How much it helps not having to do the film making. Homeschooling and Don Hanson and how they were possibly responsible for him being a knifemaker. His first knife was a file with a deer antler handle. He and his siblings were homeschooled. The way I try to let my children learn. Kyle Royer is 29 years old and been making since 14. How he got stated 1 or 2 a month. First grinder was a grizzly. He was lucky enough to have a lot of fabricating tools from his dad. Online mentors and mentors he met at shows. How mentors can critique and make you wanna do better. How you need to be able to hear people's criticisms to make you better. Over time you can take the critique and still be your own person and have a style. Who to listen to and who not to. The integrity behind how you make knives. How he feels he'd like people to talk about him behind his back. Hopes when someone purchases one of his knives; he hopes that they see part of him in it not just a nice knife. Why he goes further than the expectation of the customer. Over time you gain a larger vocabulary of skills and techniques to add to a knife. When a customer orders a knife from Kyle what can they expect the process to be like. Why he doesn't like making the same knife twice. Just sold his first knife to an Australian customer. He is excited about the blade symposium 2020 and the master class that he will be running on mosaic Damascus. What he will be covering in his master class and his hope that people will leave with. Documenting Damascus patterns for the sake of repeatability. His keynote at the symposium will be on mosaic damascus. One of his sessions on plunge grinding. To counter not being prepared he is overly prepared. How he sees social media and why he sees it's important. Blade forums were his avenue to getting his knives out to the work. The more content you show the more people see, so it snowballs. Instagram is quick updates to your life and process. YouTube is where you can put your full processes out to teach people. Kaleb started the YouTube process originally, but his brother Josh runs the channel now. Josh is an analytics kind of guy who knows how important it is to always be giving the people what they wanna see. Mom Patty Royer oversees Instagram and the business stuff. How they decide where they want to populate their social media feeds. How important it is to be doing native content to each platform. Why they keep trying new things on social media stuff. How computer learning algorithms are hard to chase. As well as their free content, they are doing online learning courses and have just finished a takedown bowie course. The Bowie course in a great quality 15-hour course. It took nearly 8 months to make. Why it was important to them to make their videos 'newer maker' friendly. Title and thumbnails of the videos are down to josh and how important it is. He feels the way he was raised was to do the best in whatever he does and that relates to the customer. The reason knives change and evolve as the process goes along. The balance between profitability and creativity. His creativity and integrity mean he loses money on some knives. How his whole family is in this together for the same paycheck. His family has all undertaken jobs that they knew very little about but if you start doing it you will learn. Even though his family has been doing this for about a year he has been full time for over 10 years. He was forging before he was knife making. Forging is one of his favorite parts of knifemaking. Great to have his dad as in inhouse builder for maintenance. He's beyond excited for his trip to Australia for the Blade Symposium. This is his first time in Australia. He only does a couple of shows per year; Blade Show and one in Little Rock Arkansas. Last year did a show in China. If he's lucky he'll have one or 2 knives on a table for the shows as they are sold. Shows for him are more about the people as opposed to the knives. He attributes the speed to which he learned to the eagerness of more experienced makers to help him. If you don't like making knives do something else. Try to stay out of being in a box because that's where creativity comes from. Why Stainless clad damascus is a life changer if you don't like hand sanding. Do what you love and try to eliminate the stuff you don't. A whirlwind trip to Perth celebrated with knives, fun and sausage of course; Perth knife show and some of best-known knife makers in Australia. I took the opportunity to chat with some of the makers and a few of the customers. I was interested to find out more about when to exhibit at your first knife show, the reasons custom makers and production knife sellers make the large effort to come to shows. Also, what the customer is expecting when they come to a show. From new makers to master smiths, in fact, the first one in Australia. 1st February 2020 I flew to Perth to help at the Perth Knife Show. After flight delays and wondering about coronavirus, I landed Friday evening. After a quick taxi ride with Bjorn from Creative Man, I snuck into my hotel room in the early hours of the morning. I woke ready for an awesome weekend and I wasn't disappointed. The doors opened at 09:00 and the queue was out the door. As normal the show started with the judging of the knives entered for certain categories and lots of applause. The doors open and immediately and are buzzing with anticipation. I've had a lot of conversations in the recent months about what its like to exhibit at a show from first time makers, also as the Perth Knife Show had moved location, there was obviously going to be the question of was it the right move. So, I thought I'd find out. I conducted mini-interviews with a good cross-section of maker, new and old, some suppliers and of course customers. Luke Berkelmans of Makesmith is a really down to earth guy, he lives a simple life that has a lot going on; he's a knife maker, motorbike and car enthusiast. His home is the ultimate Batchelor pad, with more workshop space than living area, all under the one roof. He shares his journey and passions with us. In the last few years, he's gone from being a novice maker with an interesting background to a well-respected maker in the knife and EDC communities. We talk about why he decided that the Sydney knife show 2019 was his time to start selling his knives. Discusses his worries about the speed at which he has grown and worries about plateauing. How teaching can really help to learn. Luke talks about his steel choices and why. He intends to start doing more hidden tangs as he mainly does full tang knives. Different handle materials and their drawback and benefits. Support from the EDC community has help him to grow as maker. Australia is spoilt for choice for kitchen knife makers, so he makes EDC type knives. Public perception of knife makers is often worse than other artisans. San mai, over mosaic damascus knives, and which he prefers. The progressions and how he keeps his customers up to date with their build. Luke tells us his favourite parts of knife making. Matt from RMK Leather Works is moving into Luke's workshop so we will be seeing some collaborations. Luke's style of leather sheath is different to almost any other. His kydex sheathes are wrapped in leather. Talks about why he has just started living in a camper van in his shed. Talks a bit about how he grew up, "I used to go visit the neighbour's kids and their parents would say, 'leave the knife in the letterbox'." Horticulturist, toolmaker, mechanic, civil asset inspector, knife maker. Owned a 12 second Gemini at 17 years old. The reason he initially started knife making was purely out of spite to beat a friend over who's better. Built a 2x 72" grinder to start knife and axe making with specific characteristics. Keep it simple stupid. His choices for handle material and why, based on longevity reasons. The reason he created THE DESERTER (sad story that followed the Sydney knife show) a giant oversized machete. Talks about building his own very cheap and easy forging press out of a hydraulic pipe bender. Finding your own style in the knife community when the knife has been around since before the wheel. The camaraderie with other makers at shows and bartering with other makers for materials etc. Local meet-ups between makers the trading of information and skill learning. Learning from incredible makers and artists like Steve Weis. Luke's future plans for his work, the idea of going full time and what he feels will go into that. Taking custom orders and making what he wants. How he feels about money and the sale process. The pride of having one of his knives being taken to Everest base camp. Future outside of knife making may involve tool and equipment including camping gear like a biker swag, shipping container homes etc. The reason he tries to make knives in batches and how he chooses to take payment for his orders. How he deals with customers changing their mind during the build process. Tactical sickle and night-time horticultural work. I don't take orders but somehow, I have a heap of them. Luke talks about his personal EDC. I don't smoke, drink or swear. I don't have website; it might take the fun out of it. This episode I welcome Cole Barrett of Blue Mountains Tools to the show to talk about steel. As a very experienced knife maker with a mind cram packed with knowledge, he has done extensive research into different steels and how to get the optimum performance out of them. He happily shares some of that wealth with us. In Cole's transition from an artist/ painting teacher to knife maker, he has definitely managed to bring some of those skills over into his processes, giving him an artistic and scientific approach to his knife making. Cole introduces himself and explains how and why he chose his company name, Blue Mountains Tools. Discusses that he works at Gameco artisan Supplies and what he does there. Talks about what sort of knives he makes. We talk about Knife Camp and his probationary membership to the Aussie knife makers guild. The differences between knife camp and the blade symposium. Cole speaks about how many knives per year he was making and speaks about the reasons he no longer does. How his art background helped him get good at knife making faster. What are the different grades of steel and what makes some suitable for knife making and others not. The percentages of carbon and how that affects the steel for knife making. Cole's 3 categories of steel including mild. Steel choices that are easy to use and easy to heat treat. How freshwater tropical fish relate to knife Steel. How and why people choose specific steels. People's experiences in using different steels in such things as hand sanding. Cole tells us how he finishes his knives off the belts and doesn't hand sand his knives, and how he gets an even finish off the belt. Why he doesn't generally polish his knives. What a plunge platen attachment is and what he uses it for. The benefits of a disc sander. Do knife customers know enough about steels to choose a knife of a certain Steel i.e. EDC and kitchen knives. The reason he personally chooses a steel that requires a more difficult heat-treatment process. Steel optimal HRC Rockwell. Using steels developed for other applications than knife making and developing heat treat recipes for them. Why big companies have started producing material specifically for makers on the side. How and why the industry is becoming self-perpetuating, creating better and better knifemakers and how that's partly because of the steel companies. Forging, normalizing and grain refining when and where it might be needed. Thermocycling and multi-step heat treat process to allow quench from a lower temperature. Blade quenching and cryo even on carbon steels. The correct steels for beginners, intermediate and experienced makers. Leaf springs, saw blades, known steels and heat treat recipes. Is nonmagnetic hot enough. Water quenching. Increase in performance with a thermometer and a stopwatch. For the first episode in the Toby fire and steel podcast, I figure a good place to start is the beginning. Since the start of every knife maker's journey is as a beginner, let's start the podcast the same. This week is the first of my podcast series and I speak to Shane Savage of Savage Custom Knives, who talks about what it's like to be a new knife maker and YouTuber, a bit about his background and development, and also chat about some of the pitfalls he's found, and some of the tools and help from others that have helped him on his journey. Shane and I discuss his background, how long he's been making knives for, and what he did before he decided he wanted to be a knight maker and YouTuber. What it's like to work practically with your hands when you've never done it before. Taking advice and ideas from others including experience makers. The steps of order from start to finish to complete a knife. What made him decide to start using resin in his handles the aesthetics. Shane's Steel choice (stainless or not?) The reasons for his choice and who is his main buyer and what steel would they choose. Shane's favorite knife type and how he feels about what he is prepared to make, depending on the client's requests. The choice to use Knifeprint for his design process and what benefits it affords him that drawing doesn't (find our link below). Support network; includes family friends and other makers, how that helps with the process and how you can make likeminded friends and repay them. How regularly he finds time to work on knives and work on YouTube channel. Shane's Facebook group Blacksmiths, knifemakers, Armourers and Leathercraft, how its growing, the reason he created it and the need of being on social media. Future plans and what he is leaning towards and what he sees his path being. Chasing YouTube's algorithm - Understanding how content creators must be constantly changing their tactics to stay relevant. Why Facebook's advertising algorithm is trying to get you to advertise but then won't let you because you're a knifemaker. What he thinks it takes to grow as a maker. His top tool to buy as a new maker and how to treat content that you are consuming when new. Shane is exhibiting at his first knife show in Brisbane 2020.
