It's been a while since we've heard from Ryan and Tanya Avery on the Rokcast. They join Robby talking about the season upon us, the arrival of Robby's long awaited Rokstock/Tikka/6UM rifle, and more random thoughts. Since this episode recorded, Robby's put about 30 rounds through the new Rokstock topped with a Swarovski Z5 2-10X https://www.swarovskioptik.com/us/en/hunting/products/rifle-scopes/z5-i-plus/z5-plus/z5-plus-2-10x42-bt Shooting the Sierra 115 grain DTAC NR in front of 64.5gr of N570, Robby chronographed the load from his 19-inch barrel at 3155fps (his 270 WSM was clocking a 140 grain Berger at 3249 from a 24-barrel for comparison.) The overall length of the new rifle is an inch shorter--including the Unknown Munitions Suppressor--compared to the 270 WSM. The Rokstock based rifle weighs in at 7lb 15oz, just two ounces more than the 270 WSM. Accuracy for two (3) shot groups at 200 & 300 yards averaged at just over 1MOA: 2.25" & 3.5" respectively. Since Robby primarily shoots hash marks vs. dialing, he was particularly interested in the trajectory. Even with 100 fps decrease, the Z5 hashmarks lined up almost identically to the Z5 on his 270WSM. -Center crosshair = 100/200 yards -1st hashmark = 300 yards -2nd hashmark = 400 yards -3rd hashmark = 500 yards -4th hashmark = 570 yards The Z5 does have an elevation turret but Robby will need some time to learn it and report back. For those interested, the 6UM is made from the 6.5 SAUM necked down to 6mm with the shoulder blown out to 40 degrees. This cartridge was primarily developed by Unknown Munitions in Post Falls, Idaho. The Citizens for Sustainable Opportunity is a group of concerned hunters, landowners and outfitters looking at ways to change the existing season structure in Montana to address problems as seen by hunters and landowners. In this episode, they discuss what avenues there are to improve Montana mule deer hunting, and increase an individual hunter's chance at seeing older age class bucks. They share wildlife data and look at potential biases in interpreting this data. A guy meets a lot of people on a hunting forum. While you need a good BS detector on forums, you can meet some very knowledgeable people on the interwebs. Robby hosts Rokslide forum member Aaron Tammi on today's episode. Aaron has years of experience in maximizing bowhunting accuracy, competition shooting, and running arrows through the vitals. Robby's always on a quest to improve his archery skills and after giving "heavy" arrows a try, he's going back to his roots: reasonably lighter arrows with more speed. So far he's liking what he's experiencing, including a noticeable increase in accuracy at his Maximum Effective Range. Robby hosts whitetail hunter Beau Martonik of the East Meets West podcast. In this episode, they dive deep into the intersection of hunting big mule deer and big whitetails. Although two different species living in different habitats, these guys have discovered there is an overlap in behavior of the big bucks of both species. Overlaps like an affinity for heavy cover, similar home ranges (at certain times of the year), and the ability to evade most hunters. They also discuss the differences in the pursuit of the best bucks of each species. Beau Martonik talks about how he uses trail cameras as one tool for finding big bucks, but not the only tool, and Robby agrees. They talk about specific tactics for the specific times of the fall like pre-rut, post rut, late season and nuances in between. Mule Deer Hunting on Antlelope Island in the Great Salt Lake is probably one of the more unique hunting opportunities in the world. At auction, this tag broke multiple records for dollars raised. What most people forget, is the other tag available through the Utah draw process to a lucky recipient. Chuck Carpenter was the guy that drew the 2024 public tag on the Island and his story has to be one of my favorite stories from this hunting season. We dive into the history of the island, how he kept drawing the tag a secret between him and a few close friends, his scouting process, the terrain, habitat and big buck behavior. A great tale of what it was like to be able to hunt and squeeze the most out of a super rare opportunity with his hunting buddies. This was a lot of fun to be able to hear this story, and I think you'll appreciate how much Chuck enjoyed this experience and all the work they put into getting the most out of it. Colorado Voters recently defeated Colorado Proposition 127 which would have taken management of Colorado’s mountain lions, bobcats--and potentially all huntable species--out of the hands of wildlife biologists. It was a big win for hunters. The defeat of Colorado Proposition 127 was led in part by Dan Gates of the CRWM here, among others. Big mule deer can be very hard to track in the big mountains, due to the steepness of the terrain, but you still don’t want to ignore the technique. Even if big bucks are hard to track and shoot in their beds, paying attention to the tracks on the ground will tell you where deer go, where they don’t go, and a keen eye can tell the quality of the age class in the area by tracks. And occasionally, under the right conditions, tracking big mule deer is the only way to tie your tag on a big deer.
