He attended the University of Idaho, where he volunteered in the weight room and began training and competing in powerlifting with all-time squat record holder Brent Mikesell. These experiences eventually led AJ to move to Columbus, Ohio, to train at Westside full-time. His best-equipped total to date is a 2855-pound total with a 1205 squat, 910 bench, and 815 deadlift.
