Episode 105 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is extremely retro with star of the week, Amjad Khan. Our journey into the world of The Other Khans goes way back in the time machine this week with 1981’a LAAWARIS. Directed by Hindi film legend Prakash Mehra, this sprawling masala entertainer is largely remembered for Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as a social outcast who doesn’t know what happened to his parents or why he was abandoned. The trope of the illegitimate child and the stigma he or she faces in a conservative society makes for the subject of a sensitive film - or it could be Laawaris! While the movie allows Amjad Khan a complete character arc, which was the reason why we chose this film, it is also chiefly notable for several execrable choices, none of which we enjoyed. Co-starring Zeenat Aman, Suresh Oberoi, and Rakhee in a special role, Laawaris is your glimpse into old school masala filmmaking, Khandaan-style.
