Questions Covered in This Episode: What is an idol? What is idolatry? Where had Israel come from? Why a golden calf? Where does the gold come from? Where does idolatry show up in the rest of the story? What is God’s response? Why does Moses remind God about the promises He made, why is this language used? Why does the judgment take this specific form in the story? Can Moses be the substitute for Israel? Helpful Definitions: Idol: A man-made image that represents another god or something to be worshiped. Idolatry: Try to worship something in the hopes it will make you into God. Take a creaturely thing and exalt it in a way that belongs to God alone in hopes that it will reward you. The spirit of giving oneself over to a false god in a way that only belongs to God.
