(7/17/23) Regional banks have been "in trouble" since the first of the year, thanks to higher interest rates and declining collateral values. Customers' moving deposits to bigger banks and money market funds has created an outflow from the regionals. While that has seemed to have stabilized the sector, investors should ask, 'can the banking environment get any better for banks?' Consider: With the Fed Funds Rate at 5% and credit card rates at 22%, net interest income is off the charts, upwards of 50%. Despite that, banks sold off in Friday's markets. Consider, too: with financials being a big part of the S&P, if things cannot get any better than this, it's going to be challenging for the S&P to continue to rise indefinitely without financials participating in the markets.
