(3/15/23) A nice relief rally Tuesday was fueled by the Fed's bailout of Silicon Valley Bank, but Credit Suisse is making ripples in the pond, as their largest investor has pulled support due to the drop in valuations. This puts more pressure on the Financial Sector. The odds of a 50-bp rate hike by the Fed next week are completely off the table over concerns of financial stress on the sector. Markets today are going to fail at the resistance level in a confirmation that the break at the 200-DMA was serious enough to put markets in more bearish territory. The December low is now the next major support level for the market, and if we break below that, the next support level will be the lows from October, back in bear territory. Markets are confined in this range; use any rally to reduce risk until markets rise above those support levels. Remember, the rate hikes from last year have a lag effect, and now, one year later from the first rate increase, and with financial stress in the system, there still remain 450-bp worth of rate increases still to be felt. The risk is clearly to a more negatively-structured environment over the next few months.
