(11/1/23) Markets have had three months of negative returns, which is important to note as we move into the last couple of months of the year. This suggests a stronger rally into the end of the year: Today marks the start of that window for stock buybacks; November also contains much seasonal purchasing for equities, as managers chase performance; there is also a very large short position against equities. So, if the market begins to rally, those shorts will have to be covered, adding additional fuel to the market. On a technical basis, there are a large number of stocks trading below their 50-DMA, which coincides with stock market bottoms or deep corrections. We're at that level where you normally get a bounce in the markets. Also, the advent of three consecutive months of negative performance does not happen very often (the last time we saw this was during the pandemic in 2020; that presented an excellent buying opportunity.) Negative sentiment and too many people looking for "the world to end" is a great set up for a reflexive rally.
