(6/6/23) Recent market buying has pushed prices into the stratosphere, which, history suggests, will result in a market pullback, at least in the short term. At three standard-deviations above the 50-DMA, it may not seem dramatic, the law of averages will begin to pull prices back downward. A 5- to 10-percent correction from these levels would not be surprising at some point this summer. Meanwhile, the Volatility Index (VIX) has completely collapsed, trading at three standard-deviations BELOW the moving average, which also suggests we'll see a reversal, a pickup, in volatility sooner or later. The catalyst for that volatility reversal will be some unexpected piece of news, and will coincide with a market correction. What does this suggest? Now is the time to take profits from outsized gains so far this year; rebalance portfolios, collect some cash, and be ready for when the correction occurs.
