(3/14/23) This morning's CPI print of 6% inflation for February is lower than January, but still holding hot. This places the Federal Reserve in an uncomfortable position of needing to balance between cutting ates to bail out the financial sector, versus combating stubborn inflation by hiking rates. [NOTE: This report was record prior to today's CPI release.] The Fed can't have it both ways: If the FOMC decides to cut rates, or, at least, to pause to help the financial system, that could set up for a potential surge in inflation. But a continuation of higher rates runs the risk of additional bank failures. Markets on Monday rallied off important support at teh December lows; futures are pointing higher this morning as the banking sector begins recovery following the bailout by the Fed and the Treasury. Money is begining to flow into Bonds and Technology, which have less exposure to interest rate risk.
