2024 MSU Deep Dive Season Wrap Up

March 28, 2024: Michigan State ended the 2023-24 season 20-15 and 10-10 in the Big Ten. It was a year in which expectations were sky high coming off a Sweet 16 exit and impressive performance from the MSU backcourt led by AJ Hoggard. The 2023-24 year had all the signs of what might be a deep tournament run and competing for the Big Ten with almost all the starters returning and then the addition of a top 5 recruiting class. But things quickly went sideways for the Spartans as they dropped their first game, the home opener, to James Madison behind miserable shooting. The non-conference season was uneventful with competitive games but no signature wins and then MSU started the Big Ten 0-2 with a home beatdown courtesy of Wisconsin and defensive breakdowns at Nebraska. Things looked to be heading from bad to worse with a matchup against undefeated and top ranked Baylor. However, Michigan State easily had their best game of the year and crushed the Bears to save the season and turn things around. A decent string of victories to finish the non-conference season and fast start to the Big Ten regular season once again had us hoping for bigger things. But that wasn't to be as MSU struggled at times and was best characterized as an inconsistent team capable of beating anyone and losing to anyone. They had a good showing in the Big Ten Tournament losing a close game to Purdue and managed to keep Izzo's streak of 26 straight NCAA tournament berths alive. After a first round pummeling of Mississippi State, MSU started out hot against one seed North Carolina before blowing a 12 point lead and heading into half time down 9. The Spartans were unable to overcome the half time deficit and the season came to an inglorious end.
