Welles, 24, was a rookie equities trader at Sandler O’Neil from Upper Nyack, N.Y., who died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In the South Tower, he tied a red bandana across his face as protection and became a rescuer, guiding people down stairwells and returning again and again to help others. He is credited with saving at least 18 lives before perishing alongside New York City firefighters when the tower collapsed.
