The Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Hakohen Kagan, was one of the most renowned and influential Jews of modern times. He did not serve in any official capacity, and his influence reverberated the world over. His personal piety was legendary. He was a saint, a veritable angel walking amongst men. His literary contributions altered the landscape of Jewish life. The modern sensitivity to all to all forms of Lashon Hara can be attributed to him. His monumental Mishnah Berurah systematized and clarified and organized practical Jewish law. His many other writings were vitally important to help the Jews of his time, and their impact and influence continues until this day. This is the story of the life, piety, and works of the Chofetz Chaim. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Ark of the Covenant was the holiest and most iconic vessels of the Tabernacle, and subsequently the Temple. It was placed in the Holy of Holies and visited only once a year by the holiest person, the High Priest, on the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. Inside the Ark were the Tablets of Testimony upon which God inscribed the Ten Commandments. The Ark had a long and storied history. At some point, the Ark was hidden away. For the last 2,500 years, its whereabouts have been mostly unknown. In this Jewish History podcast, can we tell the rich story of the Ark and share what we know about its current whereabouts. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . It commemorates the story of the salvation of the Jewish nation from the genocidal plans of Haman and Achashveirosh in Persia. How did the Jews end up living under the Persians in the middle of the Middle East? How did the nation that entered and conquered Israel/Judea under Joshua end up in Persia? In this podcast we will tell the backstory of the Purim story and the actual Purim miracle as told in the Book of Esther and the related sources in classical Jewish Literature , embellished by discoveries in archaeology. It begins with King Achashverosh, the Persian king who ruled from Hodu until Cush (India until Ethiopia), making a massive feast for all the ministers and noblemen of Persia and Media that lasted for 180 days. Soon afterwards Achashverosh partners with the wicked Haman to annihilate the entire Jewish nation. Spoiler alert: Things don’t go as Haman planned. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Straddling the Mediterranean Sea is a very special sliver of land: The land of Israel. The land of Canaan; Palestine; The Holy Land – there are a lot of names that this land is called by. This is the land to which Abraham was instructed to go to. This is the land that the Jewish slaves of Egypt coveted. This is the land flowing with milk and honey. This is the land that Joshua conquered and settled. From here the Jewish people were expelled, and to here the Jewish people returned. But there are other peoples who claim this land as their own. The Arabs claim it as Islamic land. With the actualization of a Zionist vision, the Jewish people returned to their historic homeland and found lots of Arabs there. This created lots of tension, which escalated into horrific violence. The Israeli/Arab conflict — the Israeli/Palestinian conflict — has raged for more than a century. Is this a solvable problem? Would the solution be granting a state to both the Jews and the Arabs? Is the two state solution a viable resolution to this ancient and seemingly intractable problem? It’s been tried many times before, but it is doomed to fail unless something completely unexpected happens. In part 2 of our series on the Two-State-Solution, we explore the many varied attempts to finally resolve the Israel/Palestine conflict . It does not seem to be a viable solution, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t try. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Is a two-state solution a viable way to finally resolve the Israel Palestine conflict? Many in the international community believe that it is the only solution. After the horrific massacres of October 7th, 2023, the international community is once again amplifying the call for a two-state solution. Instead of punishing the Arabs for their violent acts of terrorism and unspeakable brutality, the international community took this opportunity to pressure Israel to make concessions and to take steps towards granting the Palestinians their own, independent state. Is this something which can ever happen? What do the Arabs really want? Do they want to live in harmony and peace with their Jewish neighbors? Is there any evidence that they willing to accept the existence and legitimacy of the state of Israel? From everything we know and from everything that history tells us, the answer is a resounding no. Allowing the Palestinians to have a state on Israel’s borders would be a bloody catastrophe waiting to happen. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Balfour Declaration was a pivotal shift in the prospects of the Zionist dream. For the first time, a major world power declared their intent – in a binding governmental commitment – to work towards the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Political Zionism achieved a major strategic victory, but actualizing this plan would be far from easy. The Jews were outnumbered by Arabs in the land, and the Arabs were not too keen on having a Jewish presence, much less a Jewish state, in the Holy Land. The 1920s saw an escalation of Arab violence towards the Jews in Palestine. The Jews dedicated themselves towards building the land – building out the infrastructure, drain the swamps, establishing institutions – and the Arabs sought to undermine any Zionist progress, often resorting to horrific violence. In this Jewish history podcast, we tell the story of Jews and Arabs under the British mandate in the 1920s. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Jewish people are at war. Our brethren in Israel are in midst of a fierce war in Gaza against the terrorist organization Hamas. The objectives of the campaign are the complete elimination of Hamas leadership and infrastructure, and the safe return of the more than 200 hostages captured by the terrorists on the brutal attacks of October 7th, 2023. Ever since the war began, one soldier was rescued, four hostages were returned, and two hostages were found dead in Gaza. As of the time of this recording, Israel and Hamas were on the cusp of finalizing a hostage exchange deal. In this sprawling episode of the Jewish History Podcast, we explore the history and the laws governing hostage rescues and ransoms. What is the Jewish way? How have our antecedents addressed this tragic and unfortunate circumstance? What value do we place on the rescue and ransom of hostages? What are some of the political, military, and security considerations of prisoner swaps? As we pray for the success of our troops and the hostage efforts in Gaza, we look back at the fascinating and often tragic story of hostages in our history. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is dedicated by Eddie & Lottie Setton in honor of their children Ralph & Michael who are studying in Israel and their love of Jewish History. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Arab-Israeli conflict is front and center on the world stage today. The barbaric October 7th terrorist attacks – where more than a thousand innocent Jewish civilians were slaughtered, thousands more wounded, and hundreds were taken hostage by the vile Hamas terrorist organization – prompted an Israeli invasion of the Gaza strip with the express intent of completely eliminating Hamas once and for all and retrieving the hostages. What is the background of this conflict? Is Israel in apartheid state? Is Israel a colonial state? Does Israel have a right to exist? What is the ultimate solution for this conflict? These questions brought me out of my retirement from the Jewish history podcast. In this first episode of the series on the Arab-Israeli conflict, we explore the roots of both the Jewish and Islamic claims to the land and provide an overview of the events that let up to the Balfour Declaration of 1917. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The final century of the Second Temple and the one that followed its destruction were pivotal ones of Jewish history. It was an era replete with absolute Torah giants – Hillel the Elder, Rabban Yochanan Ben Zakkai, Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh and his colleagues, Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Akiva and his students, among many other giants – but it was also a time of unprecedented challenges. Several times over these centuries, the Nation was hanging on a thread. The great Rabbis were targeted, the Great Sanhedrin was threatened, the Nation was attacked and dispersed. Over the course of this time, the conditions of the Nation deteriorated to the point that it was clear to our leaders that unless something drastic was done, the Nation as we know it would cease to exist. In this podcast we talk about the conditions that led to the fateful decision to write down the Mishna and to codify the Oral Torah. This podcast was originally recorded for episode 34 of the TORAH 101 podcast and has been re-edited for The Jewish History Podcast. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Second Temple Era was an eventful time for the Jewish People and the perpetuation of Torah. Over the course of the Second Commonwealth our nation was blessed with great legends, such as Ezra, Shimon Ben Shetach, and Hillel, but the Nation faced unprecedented tests too: We were forced to contend with hostile foreign nations; internally, we suffered from discord and sectarianism; and at various times the Rabbis were targeted with assassinations and purges. To understand the imperative for the codification of Oral Torah, we must study the treacherous and perilous conditions of Torah in the Second Temple Era. In the narrow sense, Oral Torah refers to the interpretation and understanding of the Written Torah. The Written Torah is written cryptically, and the Oral Torah demystifies and explains it. But the truth is that Oral Torah includes much more than that. Oral Torah includes all of Torah that is not included in the Written text. In this special edition of The Jewish History Podcast, we discuss the concept of Rabbinic Law, its roots, how the corpus of Oral Torah was expanded, and the various developments in Oral Torah from Moses until the end of prophecy at the beginning of the Second Commonwealth. As we approach the end of December, I chose to experiment by doing something a bit different in examining the Jewish take on the Christian hero and on early Christianity. When we look at the Talmudic sources on the matter we find that our version of this story is radically different than the Christian one, and, quite unsurprisingly, the Christian censors forced the Jewish printers of the Talmud to omit these sections. But these sections were preserved and clandestinely perpetuated, and in this episode we they reveal is fascinating. Chacham Ovadia Yosef was one of the most impactful and transformative Jewish leaders of recent history. In Part One we discussed Chacham Ovadia’s complete Torah mastery, in this episode we will explore his role as a leader: as a Rabbi, as Rishon LeZion (Sephardic Chief Rabbi), a s a halachic arbiter, as a Posek (halachic arbiter), as an influential, national and international, and even political figure. Perhaps his most impactful legacy, the mission that he strove for his entire life, was what he called, the restoration of the Crown of Sephardic Jewry to its previous Glory. This axiom was Chacham Ovadia’s oft-quoted motto and life mission, and the unifying theme of his life and accomplishments This motto had widespread implications. It had religious and halachic meaning, but it also described Chacham Ovadia’s efforts to better the state of Sephardic Jewry in the political, economic, social, and cultural realm. On all accounts, Chacham Ovadia’s efforts were a wild, unbridled success. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please email me at rabbiwolbe@gmail.com with any questions or comments TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover Please visit our website torchweb.org to get your FREE TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover. or CLICK this LINK to access the form directly https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6A90DO9YIzUXxlHH3EEy5dz_H5mlch-N3GZdqtG9saMlYsA/viewform – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Of all the episodes that I have recorded over the years, this will be perhaps the most unique one. For one, it will be released simultaneously on all 6 channels that I am fortunate enough to host: The Parsha Podcast, The Jewish History Podcast, The Mitzvah Podcast , This Jewish Life, The Ethics Podcast, and TORAH 101, and of course on the podcast channel that hosts all of my podcasts on one feed – All Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe Podcasts. The reason for this is that I wanted to share a momentous milestone with my podcast family, and to share a bit of my personal story. A few days ago, the podcasts tallied their millionth download. In honor of this tremendous milestone, I wanted to dedicate an episode to publicly thanking the Almighty for all that He did for me; I wanted to thank my family and friends; I wanted to thank the listeners who have invested a staggering amount of time into the podcasts; and of course the donors who partnered with me in this venture. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, known the world over as “Chacham Ovadia” or simply “Maran”, was one of the most important rabbinical personalities of the 20th Century. His career accomplishments were staggering: He was a To rah scholar of absolute unmatched greatness. He was a transformational Rabbi – with rabbinic posts both in Israel and abroad – who served as the Chief Rabbi of Israel. He was a voluminous Halachist – having answered hundreds of thousands of Halachic queries in his lifetime and authored 50 books on Halacha in his lifetime. His accomplishments also extend beyond the rabbinate: In the 1980s, he founded the largest and most powerful religious political party in Israel. He was also the Patriarch of a prestigious rabbinic dynasty. In part one of our series of this giant of Jewish history, we tell the story of his remarkable Torah prowess that undergirded all his career accomplishments. Rabbi Avraham Grodzinski was the last head of the Slabodka Yeshiva in Lithuania. He was primary disciple of the Alter of Slabodka, and his successor after the Alter moved to Chevron, heading the yeshiva until WW2 broke out, and even leading a cadre of students in the ghetto under ghastly conditions. With the destruction of European Jewry in the Holocaust, the vibrant world of the Lithuanian Mussar Yeshiva world expired – the great yeshivos erected or resurrected after the war are a shell of their progenitor’s glory. His invested great efforts in establishing the political philosophy of the yeshiva community, and like his work in building the Torah infrastructure, his political efforts endure until today. Indeed, for much of the history of the state, the political parties and ideologies that he led were heralded as the kingmakers of Israeli politics. In his day, The Chazon Ish waged campaigns against government policies that he thought were unjust and harmful to the religious community. He also guided and advised religious politicians who heeded his advice. But he wasn’t just an adviser to the politicians, He was viewed by Prime Minister David Ben Gurion as the leader of the yeshiva community’s camp and in fact the PM visited and negotiated with him on matters of religion and State. The influence that the yeshiva community has on Israeli politics is stronger than ever, and as I mentioned in episode 70, it is impossible to really understand the dynamics of the Israeli political universe – in general a labyrinthine vortex of complexity – without understanding the positions staked out by the Chazon Ish during the very early days of the State TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover Please visit our website torchweb.org to get your FREE TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is sponsored by Bill Koen in loving memory of Michael Ben Shmuel and Yehudit . In 1933, Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz – the Chazon Ish – moved to British Mandate Palestine. Prior to his departure, the recognized leader of the Torah world, Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilna had sent a letter to the leaders of the Yishuv informing them that a Torah giant was coming. Employing classic Talmudic phraseology, he wrote that “a lion is arising from Babylon” , and a respectable delegation of rabbis and community leaders arrived at the shores to greet him. It is hard to overstate the impact that this lion from Babylon will have over the Yishuv in the Land would have over the next 20 years. From his hometown of Bnei Brak, the Chazon Ish spearheaded the opening of dozens of Torah institutions, rooted in a vision of the Land of Israel, revived and blossoming, with Torah dominating every aspect of the lives and culture of the people. The destruction of European Jewry during the Holocaust decimated more than the thousands of Jewish communities of Europe. Europe had been the epicenter of Ashkenazic Jewish life for 1,000 years, and with the destruction of the 6 million Jews, came everything that generations of Jewish communities had built over the millennium. A world of Jewish infrastructure – shuls, Jewish schools, mikvaos, yeshivos, giant Torah sages and their students – ceased to exist. If we were around to assess the state of the nation after WW2, it would be very hard to construct an optimistic outlook. But look at where we are now: The Jewish communities reestablished themselves in the USA and in the newly founded State of Israel, and in some ways, certain parts of Jewish life – and particularly Torah life – are stronger than they were before the Holocaust. Prior to the Holocaust, there were maybe a couple of thousand Torah scholars in the yeshiva world of Europe; today, in the largest yeshiva in the world – the Mir yeshiva – a yeshiva that I am a proud graduate of, there are nearly 10,000 full-time Torah scholar students, and that’s only one of hundreds – maybe thousands – of such institutions in the world. Prior to the war, the Torah-centric world within Jewry was in decline, and now it is an ascendant juggernaut. Where did all this come from? Who founded this world? Perhaps there are several answers to that question. But certainly in Israel we can point to one man and declare that he spawned this revolution, and that is Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, universally known as the Chazon Ish after the eponymous title of his works – and he is going to be the subject of this Jewish History podcast and the one that follows TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover Please visit our website torchweb.org to get your FREE TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is sponsored by my dear friend, Yigal Rifkind , in honor of Caileigh Weiss on the occasion of her birthday. The turning point in the trajectory of the State of Israel was the Yom Kippur War. In almost every way, the history of the State can be divided into two eras, before and after this pivotal conflict. In the fourth and final installment on the Yom Kippur War, we tell the stories of the war’s final days and assess the seismic changes that the State of Israel has undergone in the four and a half decades since this conflict. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History podcast is sponsored by Mike Fisher in loving memory of his father, Meier ben Feitl v’ Shayneh Yente, who passed away this past year on the 19th of Av. The Yom Kippur War is – at least from a military perspective – a tale of two conflicts: The early stages of the war were completely one-sided, with the combined Arab armies of Syria and Egypt dominating the battlefields and making huge gains and inflicting punishing blows to the Israelis. But the tide dramatically turned, and ultimately – though with substantial loss of life and materiel – the Israelis gained the upper hand and produced an incredible military victory, albeit with very meager gains after the diplomatic and political dust settled. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The first few days of the Yom Kippur War were among the most disastrous and devastating days in Israel’s history. Thanks to unprecedented intelligence failures that we detailed in the previous episode, they were ill-prepared for the simultaneous surprise attacks from the Syrians in the Golan Heights in the North, and the Egyptians in the Sinai in the South. The Israeli losses in terms of manpower and territory and positions were staggering. In the North, the Syrians breached Israeli defenses and captured much of the Golan Heights. In the South, the Egyptians crossed the Suez Canal by the tens of thousands, smothered and bypassed the fortifications along the Bar Lev Line and established very large – and continually expanding – beachheads on Israeli soil. The Israeli response was often confused, uncoordinated, insufficient and lackluster. If there was ever a time in Israel’s history where it was on the brink of destruction, it was the first few days of the Yom Kippur War. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . On October 6th, 1973 – on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar – a c oordinated, surprise attack was launched on the State of Israel by its two great adversaries: Egypt in the South and Syria in the North. The Yom Kippur War would go on to be the bloodiest, and most consequential war in Israeli history since its founding. In Part One of our series on the Yom Kippur War we study the period between the Six Day War of 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973: We outline the 3-year War of Attrition that was conducted immediately following the Six Day War; examine the factors contributing to the outbreak of hostilities; assess the military and strategic strength of the adversaries; and discuss the severe Intelligence failures that led Israel to be so unprepared for war. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . During this nearly 400 year history, the nation did not have the centralized authority of a king, and was in effect self-governed, ruled by God and punished by Him. When they adhered to Torah, their enemies vanished as if by divine edict, when they strayed, their enemies arose to persecute them as a function of divine chastisement. The role of the Judges was to nudge the people back to their fidelity to God, but not to compel or enforce as a monarch. This system worked nearly flawlessly for the duration of the Era of the Judges. The Book of Judges ends with two glaring exceptions; two tragic instances where the nation would have greatly benefited from a strong centralized authority of a king. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . We pick up the story of the Judges after the miraculous destruction of the enemies of Israel – Yavin and his star general Sisera were vanquished, peace reigned for forty years, but as we have seen previously, the period of the Judges is marked by ebbs and flows: When the Jews are behaving as they should they are unmolested by foreign enemies; when they sin and adopt the idolatrous ways of their Canaanite neighbors, subjugation is swift and brutal. After the passing of Joshua, the Jewish nation – newly settled in the land of Canaan, the land of Israel – confronted new realities that spawned new challenges. The leadership of the nation was greatly diminished – their future leaders were not of the caliber of Joshua and certainly not of Moses. They were surrounded by various mighty Canaanite enemies who posed existential military and religious threats. They became exposed to new temptations that their antecedents had never encountered. Sadly, at certain junctures, the nation yielded to these temptations, and sinned, and were swiftly punished by God for their behavior. But our nation has always been very resilient, and God always sent us leaders who helped us navigate the challenges of each generation. A remarkable group of fifteen different leaders, called Judges, skillfully lead the nation during the 3 and a half century era of the Judges, spanning from Joshua until Samuel and the anointing of the first king of Israel, Saul. The nation’s ups and downs, the stories of their oppressions and salvations, the accounts of the villains who sought our downfall and of the heroes who brought us back on track is told in the Book of Judges, and is the subject of this podcast – The Era of the Judges (Part One: Osniel to Deborah) – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – The Jewish History Podcast is sponsored i n honor of a beacon of the Houston Jewish community, and a personal friend and friend of TORCH, David Harris. Precisely 3 days after the 30-day mourning period of Moses, the invasion commenced with a rapid flurry of miracles, battles, and monumental events. Joshua was the undisputed leader of the Jews after the passing of Moses. Even during Moses’ lifetime, Joshua played an important role as Moses’ aide and confidante and protegé. Among his many accomplishments: He led the war effort and vanquished the Amaleks immediately after the Exodus; He was Moses’ right hand man in his lifetime, and never departed from his side, in fact he remained at the foot of Mount Sinai for the duration of the 40 days that Moses had ascended to Heaven, and joined Moses as they returned to the camp to find the Jews celebrating the Golden Calf; Joshua was one of the twelve leaders of the nation tasked with the responsibility of scouting out the Land, and together with Caleb, was one of the two righteous spies who did not slander the Land; When Moses asked the Almighty to choose a successor, the Almighty instructed him to select Joshua, a man of spirit to designate and strengthen as his successor; After Moses passed, Joshua immediately leads the conquest of the Land of Canaan/Israel and the 7 mighty nations and 31 different kings which are united against them. Part One of our study of Joshua will orient around his role in the Torah as Moses’ trusted disciple. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is dedicated in loving memory of Danny Savitsky , Daniel Barnett Ben Yehuda and Amy. Moses was the greatest human of all time. His resume is replete with superlatives: He was the greatest prophet of all time, both qualitatively and quantitatively; He was the humblest man to grace the earth; He ascended to Heaven, negotiated successfully with angels and brought down the Torah and taught it to the Jewish people; He orchestrated the Exodus from Egypt with its concomitant miracles and signs; and according to the Talmud experienced time travel. There is plenty to talk about when analyzing this titanic persona of Jewish history. In this podcast we will zone in on one specific element of Moses’ greatness, his quality as a leader, and construct of model of the archetypal Jewish leader. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Five Ways to say Thanks: Donate to TORCH – https://www.torchweb.org/support.php Share The Jewish History Podcast with a friend Download listen or subscribe to one of my other podcasts – The Parsha Podcast , This Jewish Life , Eternal Ethics , TORAH 101 Give The Jewish History Podcast a 5-Star Rating on iTunes Send me an email at rabbiwolbe@gmail.com – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is dedicated in honor of Carlos Weil and family. The oft-repeated refrain “history repeats itself” is especially true with respect to the stories of the forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as conveyed in the Book of Genesis. Our Sages have made the bold claim that everything that happened to our forefathers as individuals will be repeated to their children on the national stage. The stories of Genesis are thus a template, a blueprint, of Jewish history. In this podcast we survey some of the major conflicts and episodes of Genesis and see how those themes have played out in Jewish history and speculate how they can guide our approaches to modern day political, cultural, and religious dilemmas. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – This Jewish History Podcast is dedicated in honor of David Askin. The story of the Jewish people – and truthfully the story of all monotheists, Christians and Muslims too – begins with Abraham. Abraham is of course the progenitor of the Jewish nation via his son, Isaac and grandson, Jacob, and his other son, Ishmael, is viewed as the forbearer of the Arabs and by extension the Muslims, and his other grandson, Esau, is viewed in Jewish sources as the father of the kingdom of Edom which becomes Rome which eventually merges with Christianity and catapults it into a major world religion. Where does Abraham come from? What did he do to merit direct divine communication? How did he manage to have his theological ideas span the world over? – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . In the 16th century, the city of Safed in Northern Israel became host to one of the greatest collections of Torah Sages ever assembled, none more transformative or influential as Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, known as the Arizal. Kabbalah is part of the corpus of Oral Torah – like the Mishnah, the Talmud and Halacha – that was given to Moshe at Sinai and transmitted from generation to generation, but unlike the revealed Torah which was disseminated as widely as possible to the whole nation, the Kabbalah was arcane and esoteric – known to the very few scholars at the highest levels of knowledge and greatness, and transmitted from teacher to student in secrecy. In Part One of our retelling of its history we offer definitions of Kabbalah and explore the content and methods of distribution of this esoteric wisdom in antiquity. This Jewish History podcast is Sponsored by Barry Dubin – in loving memory of Andy Stern (Gershon Yaakov ben Moshe) Z”L. The word “Techeiles” is mentioned dozens of times in the Torah, and is a subject that appears in many places in the Talmud and associated literature. Techeiles is both a color and a material , namely wool dyed with this color, but to fulfill the Torah’s requirement for this particular color it can only be derived from the blood of a mysterious aquatic creature called a chilazon. T he identity of the chilazon and the process of extracting and priming the dye for Techeiles was lost for about 1500 years. In the past 150 years, the subject of Techeiles had a resurgence and has aroused much interest and debate due to several claims of the rediscovery of the chilazon and the process of converting it into Techeiles. What is Techeiles, why is it relevant, and what do we know about its alleged rediscovery? – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . On the 6th of Tammuz, July 4th 1976, a team of Israeli commandos flew 2500 miles undetected across hostile countries, raided the Entebbe airport in Uganda and rescued 100 Jews who were being held hostage after their commercial plane was hijacked. This stunning, daring, audacious, miraculous Hollywoodesque rescue wowed the world, and galvanized the Jewish nation. It also was the central catalyst for the political career of the current Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. This flawlessly executed, extraordinary operation was called by the New York Times: “An operation with no precedent in military history.” – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The story of the Ten Lost Tribes is shrouded in mystery, replete with legends and folklore. At its core it is one of the greatest tragedies of Jewish history. It began with the worst schism and civil war in our history. The rift persisted for decades and was never resolved despite many concerted efforts of the great prophets of yore. U ltimately, war, conquest, and expulsion led to the rebels to be cast away, and a significant chunk, maybe even a plurality, of the nation were exiled to parts unknown and have seemingly disappeared from the face of history. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . After the Temple and Jerusalem were destroyed, the Sanhedrin at Yavneh became the epicenter of Jewish life. Though the pride of the nation – The Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was standing for 420 years – was destroyed, and tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of Jews were massacred, Rabban Yochanan Ben Zakkai’s negotiations with Vespasian succeeded in salvaging the beating heart of the nation, the great Sages of the Sanhedrin hiding out in the city of Yavneh. Over the next several decades they will orchestrate an unprecedented renaissance to stabilize the nation, comfort them, and galvanize them to rebuild and restore the prominence of yore, and they succeeded in breathing life back into the soul of a depressed nation – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Sanhedrin, the highest halachic authority in the Land comprised of the 71 greatest scholars in the Jewish world, was the Supreme Court of the Jewish Nation. It was founded by Moshe about a year after the Revelation at Sinai and continued almost uninterrupted for 1700 years. This body played an instrumental role in guiding and inspiring the nation, and ensuring the accurate perpetuation of Torah. In Part 1 of the History of the Sanhedrin, we tell the story of this vital institution from its founding until the destruction of the Second Temple in the First Century CE. David is now the undisputed king of Israel, but before him lay several key tasks: Of course the various Philistine and Canaanite tribes continue to be a pest, and David must subdue them to create lasting stability. Most importantly, however, David needs to corral the tribes of Israel who were formerly loyal to Saul and Ish Boshes and unite them as one nation under his leadership. At the onset of his rule, David sets out to accomplish these tasks. His rule will be triumphant, but riddled with sad, tragic, and puzzling episodes. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . King David was anointed as the second king of Israel by the prophet Samuel and is considered the archetype of the Jewish king who earned the mantle of monarchy for his descendants forever. He authored the Psalms, which until this day are the ultimate manifestation of the Jewish soul yearning for its Creator and praying and beseeching Him for mercy. In part one of our treatment of this transcendental figure, we follow David’s rise to monarchy as chronicled in the Book of Samuel and intersperse it with lessons and insights and more details from the Talmud. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Warmly, Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe The history of the Jewish calendar may sound boring, complex and cumbersome, but the truth is that it is utterly fascinating for many reasons: For one, learning about how they managed the calendar offers a window into the way our ancestors operated thousands of years ago. Secondly, it demonstrates the Jewish perspectives of role of human arbiters to clarify and decide halacha. Some of the stories surrounding the calendar highlight the genius and cleverness of the sages in the ways that they navigated and overcame significant hurdles that could have wreaked havoc on the nation. Sadly, in this arena we also come face to face with the devastating consequences of internal division and discord and how dangerous it can be when there are treasonous actors trying to sabotage the nation from within. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Purim Story begins with King Achashverosh, the Persian king who ruled from Hodu until Cush (India until Ethiopia), making a massive feast for all the ministers and noblemen of Persia and Media that lasted for 180 days. Soon afterwards Achashverosh partners with the wicked Haman to annihilate the entire Jewish nation. In this podcast we tell the story of Purim as told in the Book of Esther, the associated Talmudic sources, and embellished by discoveries in archaeology. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Purim is a holiday celebrated by Jews worldwide on the 14th day of the month of Adar, and in Jerusalem and walled cities on the fifteenth day of Adar. In this podcast we will tell the backstory of the Purim story and next episode will feature the actual Purim miracle as told in the Book of Esther and the related sources in classical Jewish Literature. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Prayer is a central aspect of Jewish life. The second mishnah in Pirkei Avos identifies the three pillars that uphold the world, one of them being prayer. Prayer also occupies a large part of Jewish observance: we pray thrice daily, four times on Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, holidays and festivals, and five times on Yom Kippur, amounting to well over 1000 annual prayers. Prayer is also a major lever of influence in the Torah and the Tanach, and there are many stories of our antecedents employing this tool of worship. In this podcast we will explore the history and origins of Jewish prayer, survey instances of prayer in the Bible and the Talmud, see its various dimensions and themes, and learn how prayer reached its current form. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The ancient and historic city of Jerusalem is the most contested piece of real estate on the planet. For Jews, it is the center of the world; it is the hallowed grounds upon which Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob treaded and prayed; it was the site of the two Temples, and of the long-awaited third Temple. In this podcast, we outline the Jewish people’s religious and theological connections to Jerusalem and trace the millenia-long history of the holy city. This lecture was recorded live in Harrisburg, PA as part of a three-lecture visit to the capital of Pennsylvania. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The burgeoning yeshiva movement today, and indeed the fact that yeshivos did not go extinct a century ago, is due to Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, known the world over as the Alter of Slabodka, more than any one person. He was the first to combine two of the greatest movements of the 19th century into one, formidable, potent, and unstoppable force, when he opened the first Mussar yeshiva, thereby marrying the modern yeshiva framework of Volozhin with the powerful Mussar movement of Reb Yisrael Salanter. 19th Century German Jewry was faced unprecedented, hitherto unseen threats to its continuity. Due to the rise of Reform and the Haskalah movements bent on drawing Jews away from Torah, coupled with the circumstances – the Emancipation and the relaxing of the hostility towards the Jews all over Europe – that enabled assimilation into the greater world, Jews were abandoning Torah at alarming rates. As had happened numerous times in Jewish history, a great, innovative and genius leader arose to adapt Torah to the ethos of the time, to create a new paradigm, a new Weltanschauung, that would stand as a bulwark against assimilation, and was tailored for the people of the time. His name was Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, and his philosophy was couched in the words of the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos – Torah Im Derech Eretz – Torah together with the way of the world. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Haskalah movement that swept through European Jewry in the 19th Century, brought about several different responses from what became known as the Orthodox communities. In Hungary, Rabbi Moshe Sofer, known by the name of one his books as the “Chasam Sofer”, championed a zero-tolerance approach of rejecting modernity of all kinds. His motto was – Chadash Assur Min HaTorah, meaning any new innovation is against the Torah. In this podcast we learn about this remarkable figure and his successful efforts to keep the Haskalah at bay. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The 19th Century was a tumultuous time of fundamental change, opportunity, and upheaval for the Jewish people. For centuries, the Jews of Europe were subject to systemic marginalization: They were second-class citizens, were not granted equal rights or protection, were restricted to ghettos. The Age of Reason, alternatively called the Enlightenment, brought about rapid Emancipation for the Jews, that was not without its challenges. How would the nation respond to the doors of ghetto – and the floodgates of assimilation – opening? – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1746) was a transformative paragon of Kabbalah, Mussar and Jewish theology. Despite living a short and tumultuous life, Ramchal’s writings and teachings were astonishingly prolific, and many of his books became indispensable classics that redefined their genre. In this podcast, we meet a precocious and prodigious youth teaching and practicing Kabbalah; we go on to marvel at Ramchal’s relentless literary output while subject to and fleeing from unforgiving persecution; and we read some samples from his vast library of magisterial works. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . Belief in the coming of Messiah is a critical component of Jewish faith that is enshrined in Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles of Faith. Sadly, ignorance of what exactly Messiah is, what he supposed to do, and how to vet him, coupled with people’s naiveté, gullibility, and vulnerability, has allowed for several imposters to make false Messianic claims, with disastrous consequences to their adherents and the nation at large. In this podcast, we attempt to clear away some of the misconceptions about Messiah that enable False Messiahs to thrive, define what/who it is and how Messianic claims are verified, and also tell the story of the most harmful False Messiahs in Jewish History, and their aftermath. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . In the morning of June 5, 1967, the Israeli Air Force launched Operation Focus, an all out assault on Egyptian air bases. 50 minutes later, Israel began a massive coordinated ground attack on the entrenched Egyptian fortified positions in Sinai. Thus began the war that spanned a mere six days but changed the face of the Middle East. In this podcast, we tell the story of the remarkable Israeli triumph against the Egyptians, the capture and unification of Jerusalem from the Jordanians, and the fierce Golan Heights battles with the Syrians. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at givetorch.com . In June of 1967, the third Arab-Israeli war, a conflict that shaped the modern Middle East, erupted. The Arabs had advantages in terms of numbers of troops, tanks, planes; they had a broad coalition and international support; and their geographical depth gave them a sizeable leg up. The fledgling Jewish State had to fight a multi-front war against powerful enemies committed to its destruction and annihilation. In Part 1 of our telling of the story of the Six Day War, we look at the conditions that led to the war, the progressive escalations that brought the sides to the precipice of war, and examine the ultimate Israeli decision to launch a pre-emptive strike. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at givetorch.com . Halacha is the aspect of Oral Torah that teaches the practical instructions of fulfilling the mitzvos. It addresses questions like: What is allowed what is forbidden? What is kosher what is unkosher? Who is liable and who is innocent? For the Jewish people to exist and flourish, knowledge of Halacha must be ubiquitous. In this podcast we trace its history, and focus on the painstaking efforts to codify, standardize and write Halacha. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at givetorch.com . 69 years ago, the State of Israel was declared. For the first time since the arrival of Pompey and the Romans in 63 BC, Jews had sovereignty over their homeland; the Land promised to Abraham Isaac and Jacob, the Land from which they were twice expelled. For Zionists worldwide, it marked the actualization of their hopes and yearnings. It was the fulfillment of a half-century aspirations of Political Zionism conceived by Theodor Herzl in the 1890s, and a major moment in the destiny of Religious Zionism – the millennia-long hope of a spiritual reawakening as foretold in the Torah, perhaps with faint rumblings of the Messianic Era getting underway. What are the origins and tenets of these strands of Zionism? How did they coalesce in the founding of the State? What can the ideaological roots of the State tell us about the current challenges and policy disagreements facing Israel today? – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please consider making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at givetorch.com . “From Moshe till Moshe no one arose like Moshe” This epithet is engraved on the tombstone of Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, better known as Rambam or Maimonides, and sheds light on the enormity of his impact and influence upon the Jewish people. The mere claim that the Rambam’s contributions and leadership was surpassed only by Moshe Rabbeinu is a testament to his remarkable accomplishments. The era succeeding the Geonic Era is the Era of the Rishonim. During this time, the Ashkenazic (Germanic) and Sephardic (Spanish) communities were separated due to the geopolitical instability resulting from the constant wars between the Muslims and Christians. For several generations, each community flourished and developed independent, and largely unaware, of the other. Both communities gave us Torah giants who revolutionized the world with their character and works. The greatest of the Ashkenazic Rishonim, and the foremost commentator on Talmud and Tanach, was Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, known the world over by his acronym – Rashi. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Contact: Website: RabbiWolbe.com; Twitter: @RabbiWolbe; Facebook: Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe; Email: rabbiwolbe@gmail.com. The Geonic Era spanned for more than 400 years. During this time, the great Yeshivas in Babylon, Sura and Pumpedisa, were universally recognized as the epicenter of Jewish life. Its heads, known as Geonim, together with the political leader of the nation, the Reish Galusa, led the people with great skill. The story of the Geonim takes shape at about the same time as the Islamic Empire overruns much of the world, bringing the majority of Jews under their rule. Under the relatively tolerant rule of the Caliphate, the Jewish world flourished and an entire epoch of Torah greatness blossomed. During this period, the Talmud calcified its status as the authoritative and final word of Oral Torah, the first books of Halacha were written, and the Jewish world learned how to thrive in a Diaspora that spanned the world over. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Contact: Website: RabbiWolbe.com; Twitter: @RabbiWolbe; Facebook: Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe; Email: rabbiwolbe@gmail.com. After the Talmud was codified and sealed, the Jewish communities worldwide came under protracted assault. There were several interconnected contributing factors to the conflict and turmoil that consumed the world: The Roman Empire was in long-term decline and splintering; the Sasanian Empire had shifting attitudes towards the Jews; there were frequent wars; and there was a rise in the ruthlessness of the ascendant Christians. Amid these tectonic, tumultuous tensions, an unexpected storm emerged from the Arabian desert that swept through centuries-old Empires. The writing of the Babylonian Talmud was the most significant human project of all time. But it was not the first time that the writing of the Talmud was attempted. In northern Israel, during the third and fourth centuries, the Jerusalem Talmud was written. But catastrophic events transpired to the Torah communities in Israel that halted the development of that project. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Contact: Website: RabbiWolbe.com; Twitter: @RabbiWolbe; Facebook: Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe; Email: rabbiwolbe@gmail.com. The Amoraim were the Rabbis and Torah leaders of the 3rd to 5th Century. This era began after the compilation and sealing of the Mishnah, the canon of Jewish laws. Their collective task was to explicate, clarify and ultimately codify the Talmud, the book of everything relating to the laws of the Mishnah; including sources, examples, exceptions, etc. In this episode we explore the conditions surrounding the transformation of eras and five of the Great Jewish Personalities – Rav, Shmuel, Rav Yochanan, Reish Lakish, and Rav Kahana – who headline this time period. – – – – – – – – – – – – – Contact: Website: RabbiWolbe.com; Twitter: @RabbiWolbe; Facebook: Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe; Email: rabbiwolbe@gmail.com. The most significant archaeological find of the 20th century, and arguably of all-time, was made in Israel, in 1947. Discovered accidentally by a Bedouin shepherd in caves overlooking the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea Scrolls, as they became known, consists of tens of thousands of 2,000 year old scrolls and scroll fragments. The multi-century Roman occupation of Judah spurred much intercourse between the Jews and their overlords. One particular arena of interactions was in the realm of theological and philosophical discourse. Rabbi Eliezer Ben Hurkenus was among the greatest of the students of Rabban Yochanan Ben Zakkai. In the words of his teacher, Rabbi Eliezer on one side of the scale would outweigh all the other scholars and sages of Israel on the other side of the scale. He contributed more than any of his peers to the critical work of the Academy at Yavneh, where he served as “Chacham”. Yet his tenure was marred by a surprising and tragic episode that quite literally sent shock waves throughout the Torah world, and continues to instruct and inspire till today. – – – – – – – – – – – – – Contact: Website: RabbiWolbe.com Twitter: @RabbiWolbe Facebook: Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe Email: rabbiwolbe@gmail.com Podcasts Links iOS This Jewish Life – In-Depth Analysis into Critical Torah Topics; The Jewish History Podcast – Telling the Remarkable story of the Jewish People; The Parsha Podcast – A Weekly Analysis and Exploration of the Parsha; TORAH 101 – An Intellectual’s Introduction to Torah Podcast Links Android This Jewish Life – In-Depth Analysis into Critical Torah Topics; The Jewish History Podcast – Telling the Remarkable story of the Jewish People; The Parsha Podcast – A Weekly Analysis and Exploration of the Parsha; TORAH 101 – An Intellectual’s Introduction to Torah

The Modern Era was a whirlwind of activity for the Jewish people, not all of it positive. The story takes us to Tzfat in northern Israel where a unique community of Torah giants shape the future of our nation. It moves to Poland and the Ukraine where bands of cossacks slaughter and pillage the Jewish communities. After that we move on to Turkey where we meet one of the villains of Jewish history who destroyed the lives and the spirit of his generation. We learn about the many different movements of this time: the Chassidic movement, the modern Yeshiva movement, Zionism, Reform among others, and the great national accomplishment of the modern State of Israel. It is a story of hope; a story of yearnings; a story of great impacts and grave errors; it is a story that our nation continues to create. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Please email me at rabbiwolbe@gmail.com with any questions or comments TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover Please visit our website torchweb.org to get your FREE TORCH Shabbat Light Switch Cover. or CLICK this LINK to access the form directly https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6A90DO9YIzUXxlHH3EEy5dz_H5mlch-N3GZdqtG9saMlYsA/viewform SUBSCRIBE to my Newsletter rabbiwolbe.com/newsletter – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Sponsorship: Please consider sponsoring a podcast by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php . The Medieval period would bring enormous changes to the Jewish communities worldwide. It was an era marked by tremendous scholarship and advancement of Torah. Some of the greatest leaders and luminaries that the Jews have ever seen – such as Maimonides and Rashi – make their appearance during this time. But it is also a period that saw overwhelming and brutal antisemitism on a scale never seen before. We learn about the blood libels, pogroms, Crusades and Inquisition that befell upon the Jews and we also follow the Jews in exile and expulsion. Immediately after the destruction the process of rebuilding began. There were several key shifts that dramatically altered Jewish life for the better and laid the groundwork for the rebuilding of the nation from the depths of despair. The Torah end with the death of Moshe. The greatest human and leader of all time is no longer there to lead them. How will the Jews fare in his absence? In this expansive episode of The Jewish History Podcast with Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe we tell the story and lessons of Jewish history from the conquest of Israel (Canaan) under Joshua beginning in 1272 B.C.E until the Roman decimation of Judea in 70 C.E. Over these 1400 years we meet great visionary Jewish leaders as the prophet Samuel, King David and Ezra the Scribe who made pivotal decisions to ensure the survival and thriving of the nation; we recall the life and feats of great heroes as Samson the Mighty, Queen Esther and Judah Maccabeus; and celebrate great national accomplishments and pinnacles as the building of the Temples in Jerusalem, the miraculous redemption from Haman’s evil plots in the events that led to the Purim holiday and the defeat of the Assyrian Greeks during the Hasmonean rebellion. While this period had many tremendous national highs, it also had its share of tragedies, disappointments and friction with the other nations, which we discuss in detail. Throughout it all we continually draw the timeless lessons of history to make certain that we do not repeat those mistakes in our time and with our challenges. In this maiden episode of The Jewish History Podcast with Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe, we begin a five part overview of Jewish History. This format is not an exhaustive accounting of all the copious details of Jewish history; rather we seek to highlight the general themes, trends and personalities of Jewish history. We begin with Adam. What role does he play in the grand picture of human and Jewish history? What was the nature of the test of the Garden of Eden and what transformation did Adam undergo after his consumption from the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge Good and Evil? Then we examine the story lines of the Forefathers of the Jewish People: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. What were their eternal accomplishments and contributions to the nation? How did Abraham discover and proliferate the idea of monotheism? What are we to learn from the “other sons” of Abraham and Isaac – Ishmael and Esau – who are not the spiritual heirs of the Abrahamic destiny yet succeeded in contributing towards it? What can we learn from the rivalry of Jacob and Esau and the episode of the grasping of the heel? In our story we see the formulation of the Jewish People – from a man to a movement to a family to a tribe to a nation, and finally to a religion. The Jewish nation’s moniker is the “Chosen People”. Where does this name originate from and what does it refer to? Who chose the Jews? Why were the Jews chosen? What were the Jews chosen for? Another common catchphrase that is explained in this podcast is “Tikkun Olam” – fixing the world. Why is the world broken and how can we fix it? We explore the persistent theme of exile and expulsion throughout Jewish history; analyze the personality and leadership profile of Moshe; and examine the most significant and remarkable event in human history – the Revelation at Sinai -and its far reaching implications.
